“Another Inscrutable House”: Elizabeth Bishop Graveside Reading

October 14 @ 10:00 am

And look! my last, or

next-to-last, of three loved houses went.

The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

— “One Art”

Mapping Worcester in Poetry is hosting its annual graveside reading to mark Elizabeth Bishop’s death on October 6, 1979. This year, local poets will gather under autumn trees to read aloud her poems about cherished, lost, imagined, and “proto-dream” houses and to help make Worcester her home. If you’d like to participate, contact Beth (ssweeney@holycross.edu).

Bishop, The Armory, Key West (ca. 1938-1942)

To find Bishop’s grave, enter the main gate at Hope Cemetery  and continue on Curtis Avenue. Take your fourth left onto Beech Street (after Elm, Larch, and Bush), proceed for one block, and park. Her grave is behind the nearest tree on the left side of the road. We’ll be there to welcome you with smiles, poetry, and refreshments.
