Martha Collins’ Workshop Saturday, April 14, 1-5 pm The Salisbury Mansion, Worcester, MA

$35.00 per person, Class limited to ten participants  (Three spots now already filled)

QUICK STARTS, THOUGHTFUL RESPONSES

Part One: This workshop will begin with a very short brainstorming exercise to help you identify or refine subjects you’d like to address in poems, including “difficult” subjects you may have been anxious or uncomfortable about pursuing. I’ll then offer you a few poetic strategies, each including a brief discussion of a few published poems, followed by a prompt to help to get you started on a poem of your own, perhaps drawing on the one of the subjects you’ve just defined. You’ll have five minutes or so to explore each strategy, each of which will give you the beginning of a poem you might finish later.

Part Two: The remainder of the workshop will be devoted to a discussion of one poem (preferably a page or less) by each participant. If you could send your poem to me at martha.collins@oberlin.edu a day or so before the workshop, that would be terrific (but not absolutely necessary).
