The focus is the work itself. Poets are respectful of each other\, value the craft\, understand the courage it takes to have work critiqued\, and make the final decisions about their own writing. Please join us. Writing prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. Featuring poets Maura MacNeil\, Susan Roney-O’Brien\, and bg Thurston\, each panelist will share some of their work\, discuss what drew them to writing about animals\, and tell stories about their pets and other beastie encounters. \nMaura MacNeil is a writer\, editor\, and professor of creative writing at New England College. She is the author of three poetry collections and is the founder and editor of the website Off the Margins. She serves on the board of the Monadnock Writers’ Group and is a New Hampshire Humanities-to-Go program presenter with the interactive writing workshop: Family\, Memory\, Place: Writing Family Stories. \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops\, and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series. \nAfter a career in computers and finance\, bg Thurston now lives on a sheep farm in Warwick\, Massachusetts. In 2002\, she received an MFA in Poetry from Vermont College. She has taught poetry courses at Lasalle College\, online at Vermont College\, and conducted many poetry workshops. Her first book\, Saving the Lamb\, by Finishing Line Press was a Massachusetts Book Awards highly recommended reading choice. Her second book\, Nightwalking\, was released in 2011 by Haleys. Her third book about the history of her 1770’s farmhouse titled Cathouse Farm will hopefully be published this year. She hopes to return to teaching and editing poetry as soon as the pandemic recedes. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Duende Project is Chris O’Donnell\, drums and humor; Chris Lawton\, guitars and discipline; Steven Lanning-Cafaro\, bass\, keyboards\, guitars\, and probably another three or ten instruments by the time you read this; Tony Brown\, poems\, vocals\, unintentionally hilarious fretted instrumental attempts.) \nTogether\, these four blend poetry\, rock\, funk\, jazz\, reggae\, folk\, and whatever else works into something much more than the sum of the parts\, live or on record. \nFirst founded as a duo by Tony and Steven back in 2006\, the band became a trio with the addition of Chris O’Donnell in 2013.  Later that year Chris Lawton\, who’d been associated with the band as chief cook\, bottle washer\, drill sergeant\, and (most important) producer and studio engineer since before the beginning\, came on full time with that mean old Les Paul of his\, and there it was. \nThe band is based in Southern New England\, with members living in Massachusetts and Rhode Island from Worcester to south of Providence.  They’ve played everywhere from Washington DC to Portland ME\, concentrating most of their gigs between NYC and Worcester\, MA.

SUMMARY:Kunitz Medal Ceremony honoring Susan Roney-O'Brien
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this special event that honors Susan Roney-O’Brien with the WCPA’s Sixth Annual Stanley Kunitz Medal Award. Roney-O’Brien is the 2020 Kunitz Medal recipient. The author of five poetry collections\, she curates a monthly poetry series\, tutors international students\, is part of a collaborative group of visual artists and poets\, and works with aspiring writers. \nThe program will begin with a half-hour reading centered on the late Worcester-born Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz. Then\, Roney-O’Brien\, the honoree\, will have time to read and speak to what this award means to her. \nThe Stanley Kunitz Medal is presented annually to a person with a strong Worcester County connection who best exemplifies Stanley Kunitz’s life-long commitment to poetry and poets. The award recognizes the total commitment to poetry as Kunitz lived it: through teaching\, mentoring\, speaking\, publishing\, and supporting poets and poetry.

DESCRIPTION:Since May 2020 the WCPA has helped a few community poetry readings with virtual events. The Thirsty Lab poetry reading\, normally based out of Princeton\, Mass. was one of our first. On Tuesday\, July 27\, 2021\, Catherine Reed will be the featured reader. \nVisit the Zoom registration link to receive information on how to join the reading. Zoom will send you an e-mail with the meeting details and a link to join. \nRegister \nCatherine Reed resides in Worcester\, MA.  She is a graduate of Clark University\, Worcester\, MA\, Kaleo School of Ministry\, Woburn\, MA\, Hartford Seminary BMCP\, Hartford\, CT\, Brigham and Women’s Chaplaincy Program\, and attended Boston University School of Theology. She is an Associate Pastor of John Street Baptist Church of Worcester and retired Protestant Chaplain of The College of the Holy Cross. \nHer poetry has been published in SAHARA\, Dark Horse\, Ballard Street Poetry Journal\, The Purple\, and Windfall\, and others… She is the winner of the Barbara Pilon Poetry Contest\, and Dark Horse Third World contest. She is the author of four books of poetry:  Crossing Boundaries\, Between Midnight and Dawn\, Sankofa\, and Fire Goes Out Without Wood. She is the host of WCCATV’s A Journey of Words. \nShe is a mother\, grandmother\, and great grandmother.  Ministry keeps me grounded\, poetry helps me dream\, and my family keeps me real.

SUMMARY:"A Walk in the Woo" submissions close
DESCRIPTION:As part of its 50th Anniversary Celebrations\, the Worcester County Poetry Association is seeking short poems from Worcester residents that illustrate the poetry of the streets of Worcester. \nThirteen poems will be stenciled on sidewalks throughout Worcester using paint that is only visible when wet with rain.  A map and list of planned poem locations can be found on the program page. \nTo be considered for this project\, submit up to 2 poems of max. 49 words\, including the name of the poet. \nSubmission guidelines \nThe submitter must be a resident of the City of Worcester. \nEach poem can contain no more than 49 words which will include the poet’s name and title if any. \nDual language poems are encouraged. (Please provide a translation into English for our judges.) \nSubmit via e-mail to this e-mail address: rainpoems@worcestercountypoetry.org \nInclude in submission e-mail your poem\, your name\, your address\, e-mail\, and contact information such as a phone number.  Poets of any age are encouraged to submit. \nPoets selected will receive an honorarium of $20. Poems must be submitted by midnight of July 31st\, 2021.
