DESCRIPTION:The Worcester Public Library is sponsoring a poetry writing workshop with WCPA board member Susan Roney-O’Brien.  The virtual workshop will take place on Saturday\, February 6\, between 11 am and noon.  Here’s the workshop description: \nTraditional or “received” forms give poets the opportunity to practice technique\, to work within an established scaffolding. We tune our ears to meter and rhythmic patterns that\, once set up\, are expected. So many forms to explore! We’ll start simply\, define and try limericks\, acrostics\, abcderians\, haikus\, tankas and move on to read sonnets\, sestinas\, and villanelles. DESCRIPTION:Maynard Public Library will present “A Celebration of the Life and Work of Elizabeth Bishop.” Authors Lloyd Schwartz and Megan Marshall will discuss Bishop’s life and poetry. Worcester poet Elizabeth Bishop was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize\, the National Book Award\, and the National Book Critics Circle Award\, and many other awards. She has been called “the most famous poet you never heard of.” \nRegistration required to receive the Zoom event link.  \nLloyd Schwartz is a poet\, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston\, a Pulitzer Prize winner\, and the author of Elizabeth Bishop: Prose\, Poems\, and Letters. He is currently the Poet Laureate of Somerville and a frequent contributor to NPR’s Fresh Air. DESCRIPTION:The Worcester Public Library is pleased to present a panel of poets who are in New England. Panelists Meg Kearney of New Hampshire\, Tim Mayo of Vermont\, and J.D. Scrimgeour of Massachusetts will read aloud some of their work\, discuss what drew them to writing poetry\, the struggles they’ve faced\, and advice for aspiring poets. \nRegister Here \nIn June 2021\, The Word Works Press will publish Meg Kearney’s All Morning the Crows\, winner of the 2020 Washington Prize for poetry. Meg is also the author of An Unkindness of Ravens and Home By Now\, winner of the PEN New England L.L. Winship Award; a heroic crown\, The Ice Storm\, published as a chapbook in 2020; and three verse novels for teens. Her award-winning picture book\, Trouper\, is illustrated by E.B. Lewis. Meg’s poetry has been featured on Garrison Keillor’s “A Writer’s Almanac” and Ted Kooser’s “American Life in Poetry” series and included in the 2017 Best American Poetry anthology (Natasha Tretheway\, guest editor). She lives in New Hampshire and directs the Solstice MFA in Creative Writing Program in Massachusetts. SUMMARY:A virtual Thirsty Lab with Beth Sweeney
DESCRIPTION:The WCPA is happy to help the Thirsty Lab poetry reading go virtual for their 4th (and occasional 5th) Tuesday reading. On Tuesday\, February 23\, 20201\, Beth Sweeney will be the feature. Beth will be joined by composer Matthew Jaskot\, with whom she is collaborating on a sequence that includes eight poems she wrote for musical adaptation. \nVisit the Zoom registration link to receive information on how to join the reading\, and Zoom will send you an e-mail with the meeting details and link. \nRegister \nSusan Elizabeth Sweeney’s poems and translations have appeared in The Worcester Review\, Friends Journal\, Diner\, Contour\, The Journal of Irish Literature\, and elsewhere\, and have received awards including an American Academy of Poets Prize\, the Frank O’Hara Poetry Prize (judged by Peter Johnson)\, and selection as a semifinalist in the New Women’s Voices Poetry Chapbook Competition (judged by Leah Maines). A former president of the Worcester County Poetry Association\, Beth initiated an annual intercollegiate contest for central Massachusetts student poets\, which is now in its twelfth year. Her chapbook\, “Hand Me Down\,” was published by Finishing Line Press in 2013. \nMatthew Jaskot’s music is organic and eclectic\, drawing from various traditions and exploring dichotomies between simplicity and complexity\, activity and stasis\, and clarity and chaos. His works have been performed by the Kronos Quartet\, Boston Musica Viva\, Transient Canvas\, the Great Noise Ensemble\, the Xelana duo\, the Fortunata Trio\, the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra\, and the Boston Percussion Group\, among others. Matt has participated as either composer or pianist in many music festivals and conferences\, and his music has been published by Navona Records. He holds a DMA and MM in composition from the University of Maryland and a BA in music from the College of the Holy Cross and has studied composition with Osvaldo Golijov\, Shirish Korde\, Mark Wilson\, and Tom DeLio\, and piano with Marian Hanshaw and Gina Fredericks. Currently\, he teaches music theory\, composition\, and twentieth-century music at Holy Cross.

The afternoon consists of a short Business Meeting and a poetry feature by Tim Mayo. We’ll start at 2:00 pm on Zoom. \nRegistration is needed to join the event. After registering\, Zoom will e-mail you a meeting link. \nRegister \nTim Mayo holds an ALB\, cum laude\, from Harvard University and an MFA from The Bennington Writing Seminars.  Among the many places his poems and reviews have appeared are The American Journal of Poetry\, Avatar Review\, Barrow Street\, Narrative Magazine\,  Naugatuck River Review\, ONE\, Poetry International\, Poet Lore\, River Styx\, Salamander\, San Pedro River Review\, Tar River Poetry\, Web Del Sol Review of Books\, Valparaiso Poetry Review\, Verse Daily\, Verse-Virtual and The Writer’s Almanac.  His first full-length collection\, The Kingdom of Possibilities (Mayapple Press\, 2009\,) was a semi-finalist for the 2009 Brittingham and Pollock Awards and a finalist for the 2009 May Swenson Award. \nHis second volume of poems\, Thesaurus of Separation\, was published by Phoenicia Publishing (Montreal) in July of 2016. The collection was twice a finalist for the Quercus Review Poetry Book Award and twice a semi-finalist for the Word Works Press Washington Prize. It was also a finalist for both the 2017 Eric Hoffer Book Award and the 2017 Montaigne Medal. \nHis latest collection\, Notes to the Mental Hospital Timekeeper\, was published in November 2019 by Kelsay Books and won Honorable Mention in the  2020 Eric Hoffer Book Award chapbook category. \nA seven-time Pushcart Prize Nominee and a two-time finalist for the Paumanok Award\, Mayo is also the recipient of three Vermont Writers Week Fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center. He lives in Brattleboro\, VT\, where he was a founding member and organizer of the Brattleboro Literary Festival author.
