DESCRIPTION:The Worcester Public Library is sponsoring a new poetry writing workshop with WCPA board member Susan Roney-O’Brien.  The virtual workshop will take place on Saturday\, December 5 between 11 am and noon.  Here’s the workshop description: \nMetaphors Be with You – And they are. You say\, S/he’s a bear in the morning\, not a literal statement\, but figurative\, a comparison that brings the image to life. Metaphors\, similes\, personification\, apostrophe\, irony…all these handy tools build fresh images through the use of our senses. A meeting link will be e-mailed to you. \nJulie Danho’s first full-length poetry collection\, “Those Who Keep Arriving\,” won the 2018 Gerald Cable Book Award from Silverfish Review Press. Her chapbook\, Six Portraits\, received the 2013 Slapering Hol Press Chapbook Award. Her poems have appeared in journals such as Pleiades\, Alaska Quarterly Review\, and New Ohio Review and featured on The Writer’s Almanac\, Poetry Daily\, and Verse Daily. \nJulie has been awarded fellowships from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the MacColl Johnson Fund. SUMMARY:A Poets' Asylum Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Rush Frazier\, a past president of the WCPA and all-around poetry tour de force\, has organized a virtual reunion for the long-departed Poets’ Asylum for Sunday\, December 20\, 2020.  For more than 20 years\, it was the local poetry hangout for performance poets and drew in features from Patricia Smith to Mighty Mike McGee to Dennis Brutus.  From Eleni’s Midnight Cafe through the Java Hut and finally\, to the front room at WCUW\, you could find a cup of coffee\, a supportive community\, and some damn fine poetry. \nOn December 20th\, there will be an invitational open mic with voices from across the ether.  You can register via their Zoom link or view it on via a live stream on Facebook.  Further details can be found on the Facebook invite. \nA group photo from the Wormtown Region Slam in 2002.

DESCRIPTION:The WCPA is happy to help the Thirsty Lab poetry reading go virtual for their 4th (and occasional 5th) Tuesday reading. The next reading will be on Tuesday\, December 22\, 2020\, when Ethna McKiernan will feature. \nVisit the Zoom registration link to receive information on how to join the reading\, and Zoom will send you an e-mail with the meeting details and link. \nEthna McKiernan has been twice awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board grant in poetry. Her first book\, Caravan\, was nominated for the Minnesota Book Award. Her work has been widely anthologized\, including in The Notre Dame Book of Irish American Poetry\, 33 Minnesota Poets\, and more. McKiernan holds an MFA from Warren Wilson Program for Writers. Her fourth book\, Swimming With Shadows\, was published in 2019 by Salmon Poetry (Ireland)\, who will also bring out her Selected Poems in 2022. McKiernan works in Street Outreach for a non-profit serving the Minneapolis homeless population. In an earlier life\, she was CEO of Irish Books and Media\, Inc.\, a grape-picker in France\, and a school bus driver.
