The workshop includes resources\, practical tips\, field research at historical sites in downtown Worcester\, and a chance to share your new poem with others. Perhaps you’ll decide to enter the finished product in the Poems in and out of Places contest! \nBecause we will be going in and out ourselves during the workshop\, please wear a mask inside\, dress appropriately for walking outside\, and bring writing materials with you. \nThe workshop is free\, but spaces are limited.  Please reserve your spot by submitting a request to poemsinandoutofplaces@worcestercountypoetry.org by May 3\, 2022. \n\n  \nSusan Edwards Richmond is the author of five books of poetry for adults\, including Purgatory Chasm  and Increase\, which give voice to the stories of individual Massachusetts residents in the physical landscape where they occurred.  She also coordinates the annual Plein Air Poetry Writing and Reading at Old Frog Pond Farm & Studio in Harvard\, MA.  \nSusan writes books for children as well. Her picture book Bird Count won a Parent’s Choice Silver Award and the International Literacy Association’s Primary Fiction Award\, and two new picture books are coming out in fall 2022: Bioblitz! Counting Critters and Science Play. A passionate birder and naturalist\, Susan teaches preschool at Mass Audubon’s Drumlin Farm and is happiest exploring natural habitats with her  husband and two daughters. \n\n  \n“Writing about History in Place” is the first in a series of free poetry workshops sponsored by Mapping Worcester in Poetry to inspire new poems about public spaces in our city. Notice this undated photo of 20 Franklin Street (courtesy of the Worcester Historical Museum)\, back when it was the Telegram Building rather than the home of Worcester PopUp. \nWe will also offer workshops in the Canal District in fall 2022 and at the Worcester Art Museum in early spring 2023. We believe that every place in our city is worthy of a poem! \nPoems in and out of Places will culminate in a one-time poetry contest for Worcester County residents with a deadline of June 1\, 2023. Selected poems—as many as two dozen—will be awarded an honorarium of $75. The poets will be photographed in the spaces that inspired them\, their words recorded on YouTube\, and their poems published and displayed either on site or in an exhibit at the Worcester Historical Museum. In opposition to a traditional scholarly emphasis on originality and individuality\, or a recovery method centered on author-based interventions\, Putzi proposes a theory and methodology of relational poetics: focusing on poetry written by working-class and African American women poets\, she demonstrates how an emphasis on relationships between and among people and texts shaped the poems that women wrote\, the avenues they took to gain access to print\, and the way their poems functioned within a variety of print cultures. Yet it is their very relationality which has led to these poems and the poets who published them being written out of literary history. Fair Copy models a radical reading and recovery of this work in a way that will redirect the study of nineteenth-century American women’s poetry. \nBeginning with Lydia Huntley Sigourney and ending with Elizabeth Akers Allen and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper\, Putzi argues that relational practices like imitation\, community\, and collaboration distinguished the poetry of antebellum American women\, especially those whose access to print was mediated by class or race. To demonstrate this point\, she recovers poetry by the “factory girls” of the Lowell Offering\, African American poet Sarah Forten\, and domestic servant Maria James\, whose volume Wales\, and Other Poems was published in 1839. Putzi’s work reveals a careful navigation of the path to print for each of these writers\, as well as a fierce claim to poetry and all that it represented in the antebellum United States. \nJennifer Putzi is Professor of English and Gender\, Sexuality\, & Women’s Studies at William & Mary in Williamsburg\, Virginia\, where she teaches courses in nineteenth-century American literature\, American women’s poetry\, and book history and print culture. She is the author or editor of five books\, most recently The Cambridge History of Nineteenth-Century American Women’s Poetry (2017\, co-edited with Alexandra Socarides) and Fair Copy: Relational Poetics and Antebellum American Women’s Poetry (2021). She is a co-editor of Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers. She is currently working on an edition of the 1868 diary of Frances Rollin Whipper\, an African American woman from South Carolina commissioned to write a biography of Martin R. Delany.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate Earth Day with “Earthsongs”\, a new book of poetry & art featuring a collaboration between friends Robert Eugene Perry & Ferol Smith. \nSigned copies will be available for purchase. \nPoet Statement:\nThis collaboration with my artist friend Ferol was absolutely a labor of love. In discussing the sketches that would accompany the poems\, she intuitively grasped the meaning of the words and translated them into sublime images. She needed very little direction from me. \nIt was almost as if the synchronicity of the project was palpable to both of us. Her sketches added a new dimension to my own perception of my poems. This has been one of the most rewarding artistic experiences of my life. \nArtist Statement:\nWhen Bob first approached me about this project\, I was intrigued. Normally\, my art requires creatively rendering a visual scene. For this project\, it would involve interpreting the written word. \nAt first\, it was a challenge to read a poem and conceptualize a complementary nature scene. However\, once I started to really grasp the essence of his words\, the process became much easier. His poems inspired me to reach within\, and as a result I gained a deeper appreciation and understanding of his work.

In celebration of National Poetry Month\, this program is hosted in partnership between the Worcester Public Library and the City of Worcester’s Cultural Development Division. For ages 16+. \nRegister in advance at https://mywpl.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/an-afternoon-with-the-worcester-poets-laureate-virtual/ \nJuan Matos earned a Master’s Degree in bilingual education at Worcester State University and went on to teach Spanish Literature and ESL for 32 years\, the last 22 of which were in Worcester Public Schools. During this time\, he wrote and published 12 poetry books and anthologies\, took part in local and international literary festivals\, and founded several literary groups and workshops. \nAdael Mejia’s father was a teacher in Ecuador and would bring young Adael to school\, instructing him to practice his ABCs and write stories. As he grew older\, Adael also discovered a love of theatre\, dance\, music\, art\, and performing. Following his graduation from Burncoat High\, Adael joined the City’s first Create 508 program\, where he found a passion for developing youth artists and growing the community. Adael looks forward to working with young people\, including those in mental health and rehabilitation programs\, in his two-year term as Youth Poet Laureate.

SUMMARY:2022 WCPA Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Worcester County Poetry Association for our Annual Meeting on April 3\, 2022! The afternoon consists of a short Business Meeting\, a chance to mingle with friends\, and a poetry feature by Dzvinia Orlowsky. We’ll start at 2:00 pm in-person at the First Unitarian Church\, 90 Main Street\, Worcester. \nYou can view the agenda at this link – 2022 Annual Meeting Agenda [link] \nDzvinia Orlowsky is a Pushcart Prize poet\, translator\, and a founding editor of Four Way Books.  She is also the author of six poetry collections published by Carnegie Mellon University Press including her most recent\, Bad Harvest\, named a 2019 Massachusetts Book Awards “Must Read” in poetry; Silvertone (2013) for which she was named Ohio Poetry Day Association’s 2014 Co-Poet of the Year; and Convertible Night\, Flurry of Stones (2009) for which she received a Sheila Motton Book Award.  Her first collection\, A Handful of Bees\, was reprinted in 2009 as a Carnegie Mellon University Classic Contemporary. Her translation from the Ukrainian of Alexander Dovzhenko’s novella\, The Enchanted Desna\, was published by House Between Water in 2006\, and her poem sequence “The (Dis)enchanted Desna” was selected by Robert Pinsky as the 2019 co-winner of the New England Poetry Club Samuel Washington Allen Prize.  In 2014\, Dialogos published Jeff Friedman’s and her co-translation of Memorials: A Selection by Polish poet Mieczysław Jastrun for which she and Friedman were awarded a 2016 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Translation Fellowship.  Her co-translation with Ali Kinsella from the Ukrainian\,  Eccentric Days of Hope and Sorrow:  Selected Poems by Natalka Biolotserkivets was published by Lost Horse Press in 2021.  Dzvinia is Writer-in-Residence at the Solstice Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing and a contributing poetry editor to Solstice Literary Magazine and Agni.
