DESCRIPTION:Indian Lake Community Association presents Arts in The Garden featuring musician Ron Carlson\, and poet Paul Szlosek Admission is FREE and patrons are encouraged to bring non-alcoholic beverages and snacks to this family friendly event. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n \nRon Carlson has been performing in Central Massachusetts and beyond for much of the last four decades\, singing traditional and contemporary folk music\, as well as many original songs. He’s been told that his original songs sound like traditional material\, something in which he takes great pride. Many of his compositions are centered in and around Worcester and the surrounding area\, where he was born\, raised and continues to live to this very day. They are songs of love\, sorrow\, pain and joy\, filtered through his eyes; sometimes whimsical\, sometimes philosophical\, hopefully with compassion and empathy. in 2004 Ron’s song When Fortune Rosins the Bow was a runner up in the WUMB songwriter’s competition. In 2011\, Ron was the winner of the Rose Garden Coffeehouses’ competition for performing songwriters. The songs performed that evening Ford Taurus and A Task Undone can be found on YouTube along with many others at Ron Carlson’s musical channel. \n  \n \nPaul Szlosek was born in Southbridge\, Massachusetts\, but currently resides in the nearby metropolis of Worcester. He was co-founder and host of the long-running Poet’s Parlor poetry reading in Southbridge and Sturbridge\, as well as a past recipient of the Jacob Knight Award for Poetry. In May 2019\, Paul started a brand new open mic and featured poetry reading series with poet Ron Whittle called The Poetorium at Starlite (also in Southbridge) which closed in March 2020 due to COVID\, but reopened recently in June 2022 (in the two year interim\, he ran an online print version entitled The Virtual Poetorium). His poetry has appeared in various local & national print & online publications including The Worcester Review\, Worcester Magazine\, Radius\, Sahara\, Concrete Wolf\, Soul-Lit\, and Diner. He’s probably best known in the Central Massachusetts poetry community for his fanatical obsession with obscure poetry forms\, and has invented his own including the ziggurat\, the streetbeatina\, the hodgenelle\, the lux\, and the singsangsong.

SUMMARY:FREE SPOKEN WORD/POETRY EVENT SET FOR SEPT. 11TH AT ROSELAND PARK\, WOODSTOCK\, CT
DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts poet and former National Beat Poet Laureate (2019-2020) Paul Richmond\, will be among the readers at the next Poet’s at Large spoken word/poetry event at Roseland Park\, Woodstock\, CT. This will be held on September 11th from 2-4 p.m. at 205 Roseland Park Road\, Woodstock\, Ct. in the barn.\n\nRecommended for ages 14 and up. Richmond hosts monthly readings and organizes yearly Word Festivals\, including\, The Turner Falls Annual Word Festival\, and he has a stage at the Garlic & Arts Festival each fall. He has published several books including Living in the Breakdown Lane\, You Might Need a Bigger  Hammer\, and Quadrillions Down the Pentagon Drain. His newest work is Swimming on the Titanic. He is also a member of the Funkadelic band “Do It Now.” \n\n\nReading along with Richmond will be Connecticut’s most recent poet laureate\, Margaret Gibson\, (2019-2022)\, former finalist in the Montreal International Poetry Contest\, Karen Warinsky\, and Pomfret co-Poet Laureate Nancy Weiss. Open mic will be held after intermission and sign-ups are at the event. Poets will be held to a 5-minute limit.\nGibson has a wealth of awards and writing credits. She has authored 13 books of poems\, all from LSU Press\, most recently The Glass Globe\, 2021.? She has published her poems widely in journals such as Georgia Review\, Gettysburg Review\, Southern Review\, and Image Journal. Her most recent awards include being named a Finalist for the 2016 Poets’ Prize for her book Broken Cup\, and the title poem from that book won a Pushcart Prize. Her poem “Passage\,” was included in The Best American Poetry in 2017\, and previously she received the Melville Kane Award\, the Connecticut Book Award\, and she was a Finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry in 1993 for her book The Vigil. Ms. Gibson is Professor Emerita at the University of Connecticut.\n\nWarinsky\, the coordinator of Poets at Large\, has published poetry since 2011. Her work appears in several anthologies including the 2017 release\, Nuclear Impact: Broken Atoms in Our Hands\, the 2019 Mizmor Anthology\,  Honoring Nature\, released in 2020\, as well as pieces in lit magazines including Blue Heron\, Circumference\, and most recently\, Consilience\, published in the U.K.\, an effort that combines science and poetry. Her debut collection Gold in Autumn was released in 2020 and her new book is titled Sunrise Ruby\, both from Human Error Publishing.\n\n\nWeiss is serving as the first co-Poet Laureate for Pomfret. ?For more than 15 years she has \nwritten a weekly column for the Villager newspapers. ? Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n \n  \nFox and The Dragon: Dave and Danielle Magario have been performing for years on their own at localbars and coffee shops. They both have a passion for music and spend the majority of their free time writing or working to perfect their instruments. Friends for a long\ntime\, they decided to collaborate on music and songwriting together and get married. Performing as Fox and the Dragon\, the result is an emotional mix of raw lyrics and duet guitars with a storytelling-folk sound.. \n  \n \nSusan Roney O’Brien curates a monthly poetry venue\, participates in 4×4 a group of visual artists and poets\, coordinates the Summer Writing Series for the Kunitz Boyhood Home\, and is Vice-President of Programming for the Worcester County Poetry Association. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n \nTony Brown has been writing for well over 50 years\, and publishing and performing his work for over 40. A seven-time Pushcart Prize and two-time Best Of The Net nominee\, he has traveled the country\, slammed for the Worcester Poets’ Asylum\, and organized and hosted many readings and reading series. He is the recently announced winner of the 2022 Stanley Kunitz Medal\, endowed by the late US Poet Laureate and Worcester native and awarded annually to a poet for life achievement and service to the Central Massachusetts poetry community. His most recent eBooks and publications can be found through his Patreon site. His daily poetry blog is also available for viewing. He resides in Worcester\, MA. Tony most commonly performs his poetry with jazz/rock/funk/poetry band “The Duende Project” in collaboration with Steven Lanning-Cafaro on electric bass and classical guitar\, Christopher Lawton on guitar\, and Chris O’Donnell on drums; They have released seven collections of their work\, available on all the usual online streaming and download outlets. More information can be found at their Website. \n \nPlaying Hooky Duo: Linda Jones McCarthy and Deb Barron Northway: Linda Jones McCarthy is the author of several books\, Including Spider in\nthe Shower (as Lillie Jones)\, Old Bear and Friends and The Heart Remembers\, and has recorded a CD of original songs and stories\, Here We Go to the Sky. She performs with musical friend and fellow songwriter and arranger Rick Quimby as Owengale. Longtime host of The Folk Spot and In the Tradition on community radio station WCUW in Worcester\, Deb Barron Northway’s background is in communications\, instructional design and chimney sweeping. She sings purely for the joy of it. Now retired from jobs and obligations\, Linda and Deb are Playin’ Hookey\, harmonizing just for fun. They hope their music will be fun for you\, too!

Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n \n  \n  \nGabe Navarre was born in Paradise\, California to a family with a long musical heritage. He wrote his first song at age 11. It wasn’t very good. But as Gabe matured\, so did his songwriting and instrumental finesse. At 17\, Gabe strapped on his wandering shoes and hopped a train west\, settling in the artistic\, bohemian houseboat community of Sausalito\, California. It was there and in nearby San Francisco\, that he honed his musical chops\, playing clubs like John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom Room and The Saloon\, the longest continuously-running blues club in the country. His musical explorations drew him to Nashville\, where he worked as a professional musician for two years\, and followed that up with a stint on the Las Vegas strip. More recently\, Gabe has brought his music home to New England. His songs are well-crafted\, edgy and timeless. \n  \n  \n  \nAshley Wonder has been writing for over ten years. She performs with dynamic passion to give hope to her audiences. She started out performing in black churches in Worcester.\nThen she became a part of the Slam Community in 2014. Repping Worcester her hometown\, in Oakland 2015\, Decatur\, GA 2016. She has had the opportunity to perform at the National Education Support Professional Conference (a part of the Massachusetts Teacher Association) in 2021 that had an audience of 2\,000 people! She also had the honor to be a part of the “Still I Rise” Toni Morrison tribute Festival. She has participated in the discussion Black Creative Voices in Worcester 2021. Performed 2019 Women Of Consequence City Hall in Worcester.\nShe has featured in Troy\, New York at Poetic Vibe\, all around MA\, Boston (Hard Rock Cafe)\, RI including many colleges and universities such as Holy Cross\, Wheelock among others.\nShe enjoys teaching poetry workshops to youth of all ages to show how fun and interactive spoken word can be. She believes in the power of tea and naps.

Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n  \nCharles Ketter grew up playing bass guitar in local jazz and blues bands. He briefly attended Berklee college of Music and afterwards played in pit bands for touring Broadway shows. \nHe considers himself lucky to have played in memorable establishments like The Hottentotte Lounge\, Gilreins’s Blues club and the Firehouse Cafe. \nIn the late nineties Charles played trombone and fronted the Main South Quintet. These days he plays solo guitar in cafes\, gallery openings and private parties. He defines his style as “jazz from a country blues prospective.” \nIn 2018 Charles returned to school to earn a Human Service certificate from Quinsigamond Community College (PTK high honors). Charles Ketter Music was formed in December 2019 offering private instruction\, performance and therapeutic milieu. \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \nJoe Fusco Jr. is a well-seasoned poet/humorist from Worcester\, Massachusetts. \nJoe’s musings have appeared in Damfino Press\, Ballard Street Poetry\, Worcester Review\, Asinine Poetry\, and the naughty ezine Clean Sheets. He was a co-winner of the Jacob Knight Poetry Award in 2002 and was named Best Poet by Worcester Magazine readers in 1999 and 2002. \nJoe is still a frequent contributor to Worcester Magazine and the last Worcester Mega-Slam winner in 2017. \nJoe is currently teaching “Humor 101” for high-school students at Gateways Academy in Shrewsbury. He is on the Board of Directors for the Worcester County Poetry Association. \nMore info on Joe can be found at joesyellowpad.com \n  \n  \n  \n*Arts In The Garden is an outdoor event series that features music and poetry at the Community Teaching Garden on West Boylston Drive in Worcester.
