SUMMARY:Black Women Poets Respond to the Brown Family Archive
DESCRIPTION:Wonderful Worcester Black History Project & Antiquarian Society  Event:\n \n  \nJoin us as Worcester poets share their responses inspired by material from the Brown Family Collections\, one of the earliest and largest intact nineteenth-century Black family’s libraries in America. The collections center around William and Martha Ann Brown\, who were married in Worcester in 1850\, and their son\, Charles F. Brown. William Brown’s ancestors\, the Moore family\, and their descendants\, the Goldsberry family\, created and maintained an archive over several generations and have entrusted it to the American Antiquarian Society to be made available to aid the work of researchers\, community members\, artists\, and poets for generations to come. \nDuring this hybrid event\, poets Ashley Wonder\, Catherine Reed\, and Xaulanda Thorpe will discuss their experience working with AAS archive material and items in the Brown Family Collections from which they drew inspiration. Both in-person and virtual attendees of this program will have the opportunity to view items used by the poets in addition to other material included in the collections such as books\, family papers and correspondence\, portraits\, and photographs. \nThis hybrid program will be held in person at Antiquarian Hall and livestreamed to a virtual audience on Zoom. Closed captioning will be available for virtual attendees. Doors open at 6:30pm. \nRegister for in person. \nRegister for remote viewing. \n  \n  \nDeborah Hall is CEO of YWCA Central MA. She is also the founder of Worcester Black History Project and a member of the Advisory Committee for the Worcester Cultural Plan. Hall has over 30 years of experience working with survivors of domestic violence and addressing the intersection of race\, gender\, and community violence. She is a social justice advocate\, an art lover\, and has served in leadership positions for several programs throughout MA\, RI\, and MO addressing issues of homelessness\, violence\, and substance abuse.\nKimberly Toney is the Coordinating Curator for Native American and Indigenous Collections at Brown University Library. During her tenure at AAS as Head of Readers’ Services and Director of Indigenous Initiatives\, Kimberly worked with the Brown Family Collection. She created a video for the Worcester Black History Project on William Brown and authored an article for Past Is Present on Martha Ann Brown.\n Ashely Wonder has been writing and performing Spoken Word for over a decade with dynamic passion all over Massachusetts. She teaches workshops to various age groups hoping to inspire audiences around her to know that healing and liberation is possible.\nRev. Dr. Catherine H. Reed is the author of four books of poetry. Crossing Boundaries\, Between Midnight and Dawn\, Sankofa\, and Fire Goes Out Without Wood. She was the former Associate Pastor of John Street Baptist Church and a retired Chaplain of The College of The Holy Cross.\nXaulanda Thorpe is a spoken word poet from Worcester\, Massachusetts. She graduated from Boston University with a degree in biological anthropology in January 2020. During her time at BU\, when she was not examining primate samples\, she wrote short stories for Charcoal Magazine\, a student-led publication. In 2021\, Xaulanda’s poem was chosen for the African Burial Ground National Monument’s Still I Rise tribute to Maya Angelou.

SUMMARY:Booklover's Gourmet Reading
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday November 5th for an afternoon of poetry. \nCurt Curtin and his wife\, Dee O’Connor\, will read from the collection at Booklover’s Gourmet\, located at 72 East Main Street in Webster\, MA on Saturday\, November 5\, 2022. A brief open mic will start at 2 p.m. followed by the featured reading. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. A bilingual selection of the poems (Spanish and English) is currently in development for distribution within schools and other settings. Teen and pre-teen readers are highly encouraged to attend. \nFor more information or to reserve a seat\, call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \n \nWith four poetry collections released in four years\, Curt Curtin is finally getting his work out into the world\, making his later years a time of creative transference. His latest collection\, So Much Depends On Where You Live\, is both playful and deeply serious. Targeted to young readers in their teens and tweens\, the collection includes the “wit\, inventive rhyme schemes\, and fun wordplay” that characterized his previous collection for younger children\, but this new work includes challenging subject matter more appropriate for older children. The opening section entices the reader with images of home\, presenting warm memories in a diversity of settings ranging from a nine-story apartment to a mud hut in the Sahel. The second section moves the reader inward through metaphors of closets and themes of loss\, bullying\, domestic violence and foster care. The final section zooms out to take in the universe\, lightening the mood again with images from earth and beyond. \n“Curt Curtin crafts poems that weave sound\, rhythm and meaning into a familiar\, yet unrecognized world where children are both seen and heard.” –Susan Roney-O’Brien\, poet/educator.” \nCurtin has won several awards for poetry including the Worcester County Poetry Association’s Frank O’Hara Award (2010) and the Connecticut Poetry Society’s annual contest (2019). He has twice been named a Pushcart Prize nominee. His poetry has been published in a variety of journals and anthologies\, three chapbooks and three other full-length poetry collections.

SUMMARY:Annual Gregory Stockmal Reading
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 Annual Gregory Stockmal  in Assumption University’s Curtiss Hall \nAfter a two-year hiatus\, we are excited to once again host the annual Gregory Stockmal Reading on Thursday\, September 22\, 2022.  The event will occur in the Curtis Performance Hall at Assumption University at 7:30 pm.  This year the featured reader will be Martha Collins. \nClick [here] to view the broadside created by artist Anita Cook. \n \nAbout the Reading \nThe Gregory Stockmal Reading was established in 2009 by the Worcester County Poetry Association in cooperation with Carol Stockmal. The purpose of the reading is to continue the efforts of Greg Stockmal to honor American poet Stanley Kunitz and his legacy in Worcester. The reading is an important part of this legacy\, recognizing Stanley Kunitz as teacher and leader of his self-described “tribe” of poets\, friends\, and family by sponsoring Worcester-area readings by poets for whom Stanley Kunitz has been an inspiration. Each year the Worcester County Poetry Association partners with a local college or university to present a poet who had a connection to poet Stanley Kunitz. Kunitz (1905-2006) was born in Worcester and went on to receive many honors\, including the Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal of Arts\, and was to become Poet Laureate of the United States (1974\, 2000). \nAbout Martha Collins \nMartha Collins’s eleventh volume of poetry\, Casualty Reports\, will be published in fall 2022; her tenth\, Because What Else Could I Do (Pittsburgh\, 2019)\, won the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams Award. Her fifth translation of cotranslated Vietnamese poetry\, Dreaming the Mountain: Poems by Tue Sy\, will appear in 2023. Collins founded the UMass Boston creative writing program and later served as Pauline Delaney Professor of Creative Writing at Oberlin College. She lives in Cambridge\, Mass. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Arts In The Garden
DESCRIPTION:Indian Lake Community Association presents Arts in The Garden featuring musician Ron Carlson\, and poet Paul Szlosek Admission is FREE and patrons are encouraged to bring non-alcoholic beverages and snacks to this family friendly event. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n \nRon Carlson has been performing in Central Massachusetts and beyond for much of the last four decades\, singing traditional and contemporary folk music\, as well as many original songs. He’s been told that his original songs sound like traditional material\, something in which he takes great pride. Many of his compositions are centered in and around Worcester and the surrounding area\, where he was born\, raised and continues to live to this very day. They are songs of love\, sorrow\, pain and joy\, filtered through his eyes; sometimes whimsical\, sometimes philosophical\, hopefully with compassion and empathy. in 2004 Ron’s song When Fortune Rosins the Bow was a runner up in the WUMB songwriter’s competition. In 2011\, Ron was the winner of the Rose Garden Coffeehouses’ competition for performing songwriters. The songs performed that evening Ford Taurus and A Task Undone can be found on YouTube along with many others at Ron Carlson’s musical channel. \n  \n \nPaul Szlosek was born in Southbridge\, Massachusetts\, but currently resides in the nearby metropolis of Worcester. He was co-founder and host of the long-running Poet’s Parlor poetry reading in Southbridge and Sturbridge\, as well as a past recipient of the Jacob Knight Award for Poetry. In May 2019\, Paul started a brand new open mic and featured poetry reading series with poet Ron Whittle called The Poetorium at Starlite (also in Southbridge) which closed in March 2020 due to COVID\, but reopened recently in June 2022 (in the two year interim\, he ran an online print version entitled The Virtual Poetorium). His poetry has appeared in various local & national print & online publications including The Worcester Review\, Worcester Magazine\, Radius\, Sahara\, Concrete Wolf\, Soul-Lit\, and Diner. He’s probably best known in the Central Massachusetts poetry community for his fanatical obsession with obscure poetry forms\, and has invented his own including the ziggurat\, the streetbeatina\, the hodgenelle\, the lux\, and the singsangsong.
