SUMMARY:Solo/Duet: Music & Poetry Unite
DESCRIPTION:An evening of poetry and music. Each evening will feature solo readings by area poets that will bookend a musical duet performance in the Merriam Gilbert library in West Brookfield\, Ma.\nEach program will begin at 6:00 pm. The evenings are free and open to the public and sponsored in part by a grant from the Mass Council of the Arts as administered locally by the West \nBrookfield Cultural Council. \nPoets Jennifer Freed and David Thoreen. \nMusic by Jerry Wilfong and Rich Falco. \n \n  \nWriter and teacher Jennifer Freed lives in Massachusetts.  Her first full-length collection\, When\nLight Shifts (Kelsay\, 2022)\, a memoir-in-poems exploring the aftermath of her mother's stroke\,\nwas a finalist for the 2022 Sheila Margaret Motton Book Prize (New England Poetry Club).  Her work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize\, Best of the Net\, and the Orison Anthology. \n \n  \nDavid Thoreen’s poetry\, fiction\, and creative nonfiction have appeared in American Literary Review\, Natural Bridge\, New Letters\, Presence\, Slate\, South Dakota Review\, and other magazines. He teaches writing and literature at Assumption University\, in Worcester\, Massachusetts. \n \nJerry Wilfong is an active freelance bassist in the Boston area. He has performed with such distinguished jazz artists as Leni Stern\, John Stowell\, and Richie Cole\, appears on several recordings and can be heard live anchoring two working trios – “Bring Back Pluto” and “The Conversation.” More can be learned about Jerry at jazzfong.com. \n \nGuitarist Rich Falco is professor emeritus and former director of jazz studies at WPI. Professor Falco remains a popular festival adjudicator\, clinician and music lecturer.\nHe has presented at the annual MMEA (Massachusetts Music Educators Association) All State Conference on jazz guitar\, big band directing techniques and jazz improvisation.

SUMMARY:POETS AT LARGE BEGINS 2023 SERIES
DESCRIPTION:Poets at Large will begin its 2023 series of spoken word/poetry readings on Sunday\, February 26th at The Rose Room Café\, 4 East Main St.\, Webster\, MA.  The reading is free to the public (ages 14 and up) and will be held from 2-4 p.m.  Featured readers will be Steve Veilleux\, Michael McAfee and Karen Warinsky.  There will be an intermission and an open mic after the featured poets.  Anyone wishing to participate in the open mic should email Ms. Warinsky at karen.warinsky@gmail.com.  Open mic readers will get 5 minutes each. \n\nSteve Veilleux’s poetry has been described as “often irreverent\, sometimes playful\, always insightful\,” and he is the author of Event Horizon (2022)\, from Human Error Publishing.  Veilleux\, a resident of North Grosvenordale\, Connecticut\, is an active photographer and both his poetry and photography are often inspired by the beauty of this area. \n\nMichael McAfee is a software engineer from Millis\, MA.  He is involved with the Post Meridian Radio Players\, most recently directing part of the group’s 2022 Halloween show and co-writing the upcoming adaptation of the classic movie Metropolis for a future production.  His book\, Tarot Poems (2016)\, is based on the images and symbolism of the Tarot. \n\nWoodstock Connecticut resident and poet Karen Warinsky is coordinator of Poets at Large\, now moving into its fourth year. Warinsky is a former finalist of the Montreal International Poetry Contest.  Her work has appeared in several anthologies\, books and lit mags/blogs\, and she has two collections:  Gold in Autumn (2020)\, and Sunrise Ruby\, (2022)\, both from Human Error Publishing.  Her work centers on mid-life\, relationships\, politics\, and the search for spiritual connection through nature. Besides the readings at The Rose Room\, poets will also perform again this summer at Roseland Park in Woodstock.  Find the Poets at Large 2023 schedule on Facebook. \n\nThis year’s series at The Rose Room is sponsored in part by Bank Hometown and the Putnam Area Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Clemente Worcester Launches Speaker Series in collaboration with our partners: \nThe Worcester County Poetry Association\, Trinity Lutheran Church \nand Worcester Art Museum \n  \n \nJoin us for in-depth discussions with writers\, artists\, and influencers of all dimensions four times a year. \nOn Tuesday\, February 14th from 6-7pm in Trinity Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Hall: we welcome our second guest\, Charlie Morse\, Dean of Student Wellness at WPI for a program called Valuing Differences. \n“It’s an interactive program where I present and discuss material (based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) that helps people understand that differences are often a source of tension between people\, but when these differences are recognized and valued\, we achieve far better outcomes in our relationships.” \nCharlie Morse is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who worked in the Counseling Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for 30 years\, formerly Director for 16 years. His current position at WPI is Dean of Student Wellness\, overseeing offices of Health\, Counseling\, Accessibility and Well-Being. Charlie’s areas of interest include campus community mental health education and suicide prevention\, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy based clinical and community development approaches\, and team cohesiveness and development strategies. Charlie has served in leadership positions in national and regional organizations focusing on mental health and has published several peer reviewed articles and book chapters pertaining to various aspects of college student mental health. \nThis Program is open to the public. His short films\, “Sagittarius\,” “Reminiscing about the Mars Landing” and “Harikikigaki\,” appeared as part the Encyclopedia Show: Somerville. “Reminiscing…” was awarded the Here Kitty Kitty Prize\, and his short film “Cat” (directed by Joe Cronin) was awarded Best Smartphone Production at the 2015 Rabbit Heart Poetry Film Festival.\n\nGary received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from University of Massachusetts Amherst and works as a graphic designer. Additionally\, he provides graphic design services to the Boston Poetry Slam\, including the design of the show’s current logo (created in 2006 and revised in 2008)\, the Head-to-Head Dirty Haiku Slam\, the Box of Doom\, and the Star Trek vs. Star Wars slam.
