SUMMARY:Poet's Cauldron: Spoken Word/Open Mic
DESCRIPTION:The Poet’s Cauldron is hosted by BrujaTheVillain and features new artist every month based on culture\, music\, literature and visual arts. We produce every event on the third Sunday of every month at The White Room\, Worcester Art Gallery. \n \n  \n  \nPop Soul Songstress\, Tenille Ja’Nae Aug 05\, 2022 Single release “ Notifications” \nBrooklyn-based singer/songwriter Tenille Ja’Nae is a rising R&B/soul artist who fits comfortably in the adult contemporary genre. A New York transplant\, born and raised in Little Rock\, AR\, Tenille Ja’Nae has taken her experiences to create music that is real\, heartfelt\, and relevant. Her newest single\, Notifications was released Aug. 05 2022\, and is one of her most unique tracks to date. Tenille Ja’Nae’s relationship experiences\, feeling like she’s found the love of her life\, to realize it was everything but\, was devastating! Even worst\, not being able to escape this person’s dealings\, and whereabouts which made it that much more difficult to get over the heartbreak of letting go. Hence\, “Notifications” \nDrawing frequent vocal comparisons to Adele\, India Arie\, with hints of Whitney Houston\, Tenille Ja’Nae’s soulful vocals and lyrics brings a bright\, soothing\, and catchy acoustic melody to other songs like “Familiar Strangers”. The stories within many of her songs are meant to draw the listener in to reflect on their own life experiences. It’s Tenille Ja’Nae’s hope that this storytelling approach to her music will be able to reach the masses and have a positive influence on the lives of others. “Mood” on all digital and streaming platforms. Her previous singles\, “Familiar Strangers”\, “Try It Again\,” “In My Feelings” and “Too Many Times\,” are all available now\, links below. These tracks are a great introduction to her unique storytelling style and her classy\, contemporary sound. Get ready to see Tenille Ja’Nae on stages across NYC in the coming months\, along with special performances in LA\, ATL; Chicago music festivals.

SUMMARY:a Workshop with Martha Collins
DESCRIPTION:Martha Collins’ Workshop Saturday\, April 14\, 1-5 pm The Salisbury Mansion\, Worcester\, MA \n \n  \n$35.00 per person\, Class limited to ten participants  (Three spots now already filled) \n  \nQUICK STARTS\, THOUGHTFUL RESPONSES \nPart One: This workshop will begin with a very short brainstorming exercise to help you identify or refine subjects you’d like to address in poems\, including “difficult” subjects you may have been anxious or uncomfortable about pursuing. I’ll then offer you a few poetic strategies\, each including a brief discussion of a few published poems\, followed by a prompt to help to get you started on a poem of your own\, perhaps drawing on the one of the subjects you’ve just defined. You’ll have five minutes or so to explore each strategy\, each of which will give you the beginning of a poem you might finish later. \nPart Two: The remainder of the workshop will be devoted to a discussion of one poem (preferably a page or less) by each participant. If you could send your poem to me at martha.collins@oberlin.edu a day or so before the workshop\, that would be terrific (but not absolutely necessary).

SUMMARY:12-Hour Write-a-Thon
DESCRIPTION:A fundraiser in the form of a Write-a-Thon will take place at New Dawn Arts Center at 84 Main Street in Ashburnham on Saturday\, April 15th\, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. \nThe Write-a-Thon is the brainchild of Kevin Scott Hall\, one of the instructors of the free Tuesday night writing workshops at the Center. He\, along with the other instructors\, Melissa Dorval and Fred Gerhard\, support the cause. Hall also serves on the Board. \n“This is for all the writers and aspiring writers who want to write more but are constantly saying\, ‘But I don’t have time’—usually because of work demands or children or other life events\,” Hall says.  “Well\, no excuses now. You can plan ahead to devote the entire day to writing! And you’ll also be helping out New Dawn!” \nThe idea is for writers to ask friends to donate a set amount per hour for the event. So\, if someone sponsors a writer for $1/hour\, the writer would collect $12 from that donor\, which would then go to New Dawn. \n“It’s meant to be a challenge\,” Hall says. “Twelve hours is a long time to keep your butt in the chair to focus on your writing.” He encourages the participants to take a short break every hour or two and take a walk around the neighborhood or chat with another writer—perhaps even collaborate. Hall also urges local college and high school students to join the cause. “As a former college professor myself\, I know there are a lot of procrastinators out there. Come on\, students! Use this time to get that paper done!” \nThe plan is to have the writers gather at about 7:30 pm on the Write-a-Thon Day to share something they’ve written that day during open mic. These will likely be first drafts\, so writing will be encouraged and not critiqued. The public may also attend the open mic to listen. To visit our website click Here! \nTo register and get a sponsor form\, stop by New Dawn or email Kevin at kevsco76@gmail.com \n  \n \nThe leaders of the New Dawn Writers’ Group and the Write-a-Thon are Fred Gerhard\, Melissa Dorval\, and Kevin Scott Hall: \nMelissa Dorval has had her poems\, short stories\, and articles published in various journals. Her new micro-essay will be featured in the inaugural issue of The Sixpence Society Literary Journal and her latest poem will appear in Creative Zine\, both this fall. Her debut novel\, When You Lose Control\, has just been accepted by a New Hampshire publisher. SUMMARY:Princeton Library Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Princeton Library for a reading with Moira Linehan and Jeffrey Thomson. \n  \nJeffrey Thomson is a poet\, memoirist\, and translator\, and is the author of multiple books including Half/Life: New and Selected Poems\, The Belfast Notebooks\, fragile\, Birdwatching in Wartime\, The Complete Poems of Catullus\, and From the Fishouse. He has been an NEA Fellow and a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar. \nThomson is the Director of the BFA Program and the author of four books of poems\, including Birdwatching in Wartime\, winner of both the 2010 Maine Book Award and the 2011 ASLE Award in Environmental Creative Writing\, and Renovation.  Birdwatching in Wartimeis currently being translated into Spanish and Russian.  His translations of the Roman poet\, Catullus\, are forthcoming from Cambridge University Press.  In 2012 he was the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar in Creative Writing at the Seamus Heaney Poetry Centre at Queen’s University Belfast.  His website is www.jeffreythomson.com. \n  \nMoira Linehan is the author of four collections of poetry. Her first two books\, If No Moon (2007) and Incarnate Grace (2015)\, were published by Southern Illinois University Press. If No Moon had been selected by Dorianne Laux as winner of the 2006 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry open competition. Both those books were named Honor Books in Poetry in the Massachusetts Book Awards. In June 2020 Slant Books published her third collection\, Toward. The three collections take on the loss of her husband\, a diagnosis of breast cancer\, and offer meditations on her two signature landscapes: the pond behind her home of almost forty years in Winchester\, Massachusetts and the far reaches of Ireland. \nLinehan’s fourth collection\, & Company\, published in December 2020 by Dos Madres Press\, moves into a new setting\, subject\, and style. In a search to know her maternal grandmother\, Linehan turns to the documentation painters left of the fashion worlds in Paris and Boston in which her grandmother worked as a dress designer and seamstress. Those paintings let her imagine her grandmother in the heart of those worlds. At times as background\, at times as foreground\, they are the source of many of the narrative and ekphrastic poems in this collection. Among those poems are also elegies for her own mother. \nWidely published\, Linehan has had poems appear in such journals as AGNI\, The Georgia Review\, Image\, Nimrod\, Notre Dame Review\, Poet Lore\, Poetry\, Poetry East\, and Prairie Schooner\, among others. Her poem “Entering the Cill Rialaig Landscape” was chosen as the First Place Grand Prize winner in Atlanta Review’s 2016 International Poetry Competition. She has been the recipient of numerous writing residencies\, including ones at the Cill Rialaig Project in Co. Kerry\, Ireland; the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Co. Monaghan\, Ireland; the Helen Riaboff Whiteley Center in Friday Harbor\, WA; and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst\, VA. \nA Connecticut native\, Linehan has lived her adult life in the greater Boston area. After careers as a high school English teacher and administrator in high tech and academic settings\, she now writes full-time and occasionally leads writing workshops.
