DESCRIPTION:Featuring Connecticut State Poet Laureate Antoinette Brim-Bell \n \nThe current Connecticut State Poet Laureate (2022-2025)\, Antoinette Brim-Bell will read on June 4 th at Roseland Park. This reading will be held in the barn and will be from 2-4 p.m. Reading with Ms. Brim-Bell will be former poet laureate of West Haven\, Tony Fusco\, and author/poet Karen Warinsky of Woodstock. This event is free to the public (ages 14 and up) and begins this year’s readings in the park which include events on Sept. 10 th and Oct. 8 th . There will be an intermission and an open mic after the featured poets. Anyone wishing to participate in the open mic should email karen.warinsky@gmail.com. Open mic readers will get 5 minutes each. \n  \nBrim-Bell is the author of three full-length poetry collections: These Women You Gave Me\, Icarus in Love\, and Psalm of the Sunflower. She is a Cave Canem Foundation Fellow and an alumna of Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation (VONA). Her poetry has appeared in various journals\, magazines\, textbooks\, and anthologies\, including Villanelles\, 44 on 44: Forty-Four African American Writers on the 44th President of the United States\, Not A Muse\, and has appeared in Poetry Magazine and Poem-a-Day\, as well as numerous critical essays. \n  \nA printmaker and collage artist\, Brim-Bell has exhibited her work widely\, serves on several arts organization boards and is a professor of English at Capital Community College in Hartford\, CT. Tony Fusco was West Haven\, Connecticut’s Poet Laureate in 2019. He is the past president of the Connecticut Poetry Society and has edited several poetry anthologies. Fusco received The Eve Cummings Poetry Prize\, among other awards\, and he produced the poetry series West Shore Poets at Citizen’s Television in New Haven. \n  \nKaren Warinsky is a former finalist of the Montreal International Poetry Contest and is the coordinator of Poets at Large\, a group of regional poets who perform in Connecticut and Massachusetts. She is the author of two books of poetry\, Gold in Autumn (2020) and Sunrise Ruby (2022) both from Human Error Publishing. Other published work includes the short story\, “Decatur Girl” featured in Dear Nana\, (Pegasus Books) two poems in the 2017 anthology Nuclear Impact: Broken Atoms in Our Hands\, (Shabda Press) and poems in editions of Blue Heron\, Light; a Journal of Photography and Poetry\, the 2019 Mizmor Anthology\, Deep Wild Journal\, Honoring Nature\, Circumference and Consilience.

DESCRIPTION:Indian Lake Community Association presents Arts in The Garden featuring poet\, Susan Roney O’Brien\, and musician\, Fox and the Dragon. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n  \nSusan Roney  O’Brien curates a monthly poetry venue\, is part of 4 X 4\, a group of visual artists and poets and is the vice president of programming for the Worcester County Poetry Association. Her poetry has been published widely\, translated into Braille and Mandarin and nominated for many Pushcart Prizes. She won the 2020 Stanley Kunitz Medal in Poetry. Publications include chapbooks: Farmwife\, the winner of the William and Kingman Page Poetry Book Award\, and Earth (Cat Rock Press). Word Poetry published Legacy of the Lost World in 2016. Kelsay Books published Bone Circle\, in 2018 and Thira in April\, 2020.\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nJared Fiske is a performing musician out of central MA. He has been performing professionally for 20+ years. Fiske is best known for his work as a solo performer and songwriter\, and as a member of the popular Americana/rock outfit “The Casters”. He also performs in an acoustic duo with his wife\, Jessica\, under the pseudonym “Never Say Never”. He was also a member of the (now defunct) folk-pop duo “Fiske and Herrera”\, who recorded and toured throughout the country from 2006-2011.  Fiske’s original song “Choice” was selected for use in a short film by the non-profit organization Planetaid.org. He also co-wrote the song “On a Monday” which received the $5\,000 grand prize award at ourstage.com for best song in 2009. His music has been described as “Alluring and beautiful” by Tim Harrington of the band Tall Heights\, and Worcester Magazine said of his most recent album “We’re Already Gone” that “there’s really no way to prepare oneself for how achingly beautiful and melancholy Jared Fiske’s new album is.” (Victor Infante). Fiske runs a small home studio\, “Foundation Studios”\, and has produced and/or engineered albums for many prominent musicians including Tall Heights\, Dave Dersham\, and many of Fiske’s own solo and group recording projects. Hailing from an artistic family\, Fiske began performing in musical groups with his father\, Rob Adams\, and brother Seth at a young age. “It was the best possible way to learn\,” recalls Fiske. “You really had to sink or swim and get over the stage fright in a hurry.” You can catch Jared performing at bars\, coffeehouses and festivals throughout Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:American Antiquarian Society’s wonderful virtual evening with Camille T. Dungy. \n  \n \nIn Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden\, poet and scholar Camille T. Dungy recounts the seven-year odyssey to diversify her garden in the predominantly white community of Fort Collins\, Colorado. When she moved there in 2013\, with her husband and daughter\, the community held strict restrictions about what residents could and could not plant in their gardens. \nDungy’s research on what grew in and around her garden led her to the work of a nineteenth-century botanist named Thomas Nuttall\, who lived and worked in North America from 1808-1841. Consulting the taxonomical names for scores of North American species\, Dungy began to see Nuttall’s imprint and legacy in her garden and the surrounding landscape. \nIn resistance to the homogenous policies that limited the possibility and wonder that grows from the earth\, Dungy employs the various plants\, herbs\, vegetables\, and flowers she grows in her garden\, many of which were named by or for Thomas Nuttall\, as metaphor and treatise for how homogeneity threatens the future of our planet\, and why cultivating diverse and intersectional language in our national discourse about the environment is the best means of protecting it. \nPlease visit their website to register. \n  \n  \n

In May 2019\, Paul started a brand new open mic and featured poetry reading series with poet Ron Whittle called The Poetorium at Starlite (also in Southbridge) which closed in March 2020 due to COVID\, but reopened recently in June 2022 (in the two-year interim\, he ran an online print version entitled The Virtual Poetorium which he still continues under the name The International Imaginarium For Word & Verse). His poetry has appeared in various local & national print & online publications including The Worcester Review\, Worcester Magazine\, Radius\, Sahara\, Concrete Wolf\, Soul-Lit\, and Diner.
