SUMMARY:Karen Elizabeth Sharpe: Prayer Can Be Anything
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nIt’s said poems are prayers. These poems are mile markers in a life that finds faith in poetry.\n—Richard Blanco\, Presidential Inaugural Poet\, author of How to Love a Country \nKaren Elizabeth Sharpe’s poetry collection\, Prayer Can Be Anything\, gorgeously shakes the reader into one “dream-soaked awakening” after another. The natural world\, world of bright- flashing birds and frozen-over wood frogs\, world of fields “lit with daisies” is brought to vivid life by Sharpe’s deft\, inventive use of language and her sure hand with imagery. But the world of this book is also shadowed with violence and loss as the speaker performs the difficult task of commemorating an imperfect and early-dead father and of coming to terms with the wounds that painfully shaped her own life. At once aching elegy and forthright reckoning\, Prayer Can Be Anything is proof of the exponential power in the telling of one woman’s truth. \n—Francesca Bell\, author of Whoever Drowned Here: New and Selected Poems by Max Sessner\, What Small Sound and Bright Stain \n  \nBooks available for sale in the shop or purchase here. \nWith lush\, vibrant language and a keen and unflinching observation of the world and life\, Sharpe’s second collection asks us to shed ourselves of pretense and look at the world through our wounded\, vulnerable hearts. Whether considering the natural world around us\, or an inner world\, these poems ask us to look with a steady eye to the love\, hurt\, and healing that shape us. \n  \n  \n  \nKaren Elizabeth Sharpe is a poetry editor at the Worcester Review\, and her poems have appeared in Columbia Journal\, West Trade Review\, Mom Egg Review\, Catalyst\, Mason Street Review and other magazines and anthologies. Karen has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. She has been a coffee-cart clerk\, a babysitter\, a journalist and editor\, a caterer\, a funeral ceremonialist\, a professional fundraiser\, and an assistant vice-president at two universities. She celebrates the healing power of forgiveness in relationships.

SUMMARY:Artists Who Are Poets/Poets Who Are Artists Featuring Richard Fox
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for what promises to be an amazing evening of poetry featuring local poet & legend Richard Fox. The event will be hosted by poet Paul Szlosek (filling in for the series’ regular host Sam Lalos) with Richard reading precisely at 5:30 PM followed by the open mic (two poems or five minutes for each reader with the sign-up starting at 5 pm.) So come and enjoy Richard’s incredibly thought-provoking poetry and listen to other local poets at Tidepool Bookshop. \n \n  \nRichard Fox is a local poet and legend born and bred in Worcester MA. He attended the progressive Webster University in the early 1970s. These diverse cultures shaped his worldview and love of words. John Hodgen\, winner of the AWP Donald Hall Poetry Prize\, writes of him: “Rich Fox calls himself a small poet at large\, but there is nothing small about his poems . . . They are large-themed and large-hearted\, framed by a world at war with itself and a world all the more lovely when it is almost taken from us\, when we see how filled to overflowing it is with light and joy and longing and loss. These are well crafted\, poignant\, clever\, and ultimately wise poems which leave the reader wanting to believe one can throw one’s arms around this hard-won world\, and\, better yet\, that the world will hold us in its arms as well.” Richard’s poems feature rock ’n roll and youthful transgressions\, but his focus is cancer from the patient’s point of view. He is the author of eight poetry collections\, the latest\, Poems for my Zady & Miscellany (2023). Winner of the 2017 Frank O’Hara Prize\, Richard seconds Stanley Kunitz’s motion that people in Worcester are “provoked to poetry”.

SUMMARY:A Feast of Losses\, Judy Ferrara Book Reading
