SUMMARY:Ron Whittle Veterans Day Tribute Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Veterans Day tribute reading as Vietnam veteran and poet Ron Whittle reads from Postcards From a War Zone and his other poetry collections to be followed by an open reading (two poems or five minutes for each reader with the sign-up starting at 5 p.m.).\n  \nRon Whittle \nRon Whittle was born in Worcester\, MA in 1947 and was educated in his hometown of Shrewsbury MA. Further education came by way of the U.S. Navy\, Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict\, the Apollo 13 recovery team\, and 50 years of family living. Ron divides his time between his home in Worcester\, and the shores of Cape Cod. Ron’s free-verse poetry is recognized as thoughtful\, romantic\, thought-provoking\, serious\, and funny. His wonderfully warped and quirky point of view will surely make you smile and perhaps give you a laugh. His influences include Tom Waits\, Lawrence Ferlinghetti\, Edgar Allan Poe\, Ogden Nash\, Jack Kerouac\, and Rod McKuen to name a few. Those who have enjoyed Ron’s previous work can hear and see him in appearances throughout New England. Ron has appeared on television shows such as “Wake Up and Smell the Poetry Starring Cheryl Perrault” and the Worcester Public Access Cable Vision.  Most recently\, he was on the radio with poet and radio personality Tommy Twilight in Florence\, MA. He has read at many major poetry events such as the Massachusetts Poetry Festival in Salem\, MA\, the National Beat Poetry Foundation in Connecticut\, the Great Falls Word Festival at Turners Falls\, MA. and the Quabbin Garlic Festival in Orange\, MA. He also recently appeared with other beat poets at the International Beat Poets yearly review. Much of his poetry has been published in both print and online journals such as Vietnam War Poetry\, Lavida Life Magazine\, The Quabbin Review\, and the anthology Hope Through Community. Ron’s book Postcards From a War Zone was accepted into the collection at the acclaimed New York City’s Poet House. Ron’s books are currently available on Amazon as well as internationally. Ron is also a founder and co-host of the Poetorium Poetry Show at the Starlite Bar & Gallery in Southbridge\, MA. Somehow\, he survived and escaped the ravages of the COVID-19 epidemic\, but could not escape the bodily damage left over from Vietnam. Three years later\, he’s a survivor of cancer caused by the effects of Agent Orange.

He started writing poetry after he moved to Northampton\, Massachusetts\, and worked with the poet Jack Gilbert. \n  \nAnderson has written about his experiences in the Vietnam War in both poetry and nonfiction. He is the author of the poetry collections The Moon Reflected Fire (1994)\, the winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award\, and Blues for Unemployed Secret Police (2000). In 2009 he published his memoir\, Keep Your Head Down: Vietnam\, the Sixties\, and a Journey of Self-Discovery. His most recent book is Horse Medicine (Barrow Street Press\, 2015). Anderson’s awards include a grant from the Eric Mathieu King Fund of the Academy of American Poets\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, and a Pushcart Prize. Anderson has taught at the University of Connecticut\, Eastern Connecticut State University\, and the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Its Social Consequences at the University of Massachusetts\, Boston. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Halloween-themed triple feature edition of our monthly open mic and featured poetry reading series The Poetorium at Starlite hosted by Paul Szlosek and Ron Whittle. It will be a full evening of poetry & spoken word starting with a brief interview on stage with our three featured poets Meg Smith (Author of Dear Deepest Ghost\, & Straw\, Feathers\, Bones)\, Trisha J. Wooldridge\, (Author of The 27 Kingdoms Fantasy Series)\, & Michael McAfee (Author of Tarot Poems) followed by readings by our 3 features\, a 10-minute tribute to a dead poet by a guest reader\, a short intermission\, and then an open mic (with 5-minute slots for each reader). DESCRIPTION:Indian Lake Community Association presents Arts in The Garden “an outdoor event that features music and poetry at the Community Teaching Garden on West Boylston Drive in Worcester. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n  \n  \nTina Le & Nat Needle \n\nNat Needle was born and raised in New York City. He trained in classical piano until age 17. He then devoted himself to the study and performance of African American music from enslavement onward\, with a focus on early jazz\, blues\, swing\, r & b\, and the emergence of bebop. He has lived in Worcester since 2000 performing piano and vocals at various music venues and out in the community. Since 2013\, he has taught piano independently to students ages 5 to seniors. \n\n  \n  \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nBorn and raised in Vietnam\, Tina Le came to Worcester from Vietnam when she was just 12 years old. Her passion for music was the motivation to keep her going despite the troubles she faced. She started to listen to jazz and learned a little about it just 2 years ago. Through connecting with Nat\, Tina was able to discover her love for jazz. DESCRIPTION:Indian Lake Community Association presents Arts in The Garden “an outdoor event that features music and poetry at the Community Teaching Garden on West Boylston Drive in Worcester. Performances will be every other Thursday starting July 7th from 6:30-8:00pm. Rain dates are the following day (Friday). \nOn October 5th we will be featuring musician PE James\, and poet Joe Fusco Jr. Admission is FREE and patrons are encouraged to bring non-alcoholic beverages and snacks to this family friendly event. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n  \nPE James has been entertaining audiences by singing and playing acoustic guitar for over four decades.   He is an interpreter of well known songs\, having a large repertoire that stretches from the sing-along classics of the 20s\, 30s\, and 40s\, to standards and show tunes\, early 50s rock and roll\, 60s folk songs\, and acoustic rock songs of the 70s.​He also writes and performs original material\, and his songs have been played on radio stations in Worcester\, Massachusetts and his native Pittsburgh\, PA.  His song “The Pantyhose Blues” has become a crowd favorite.  He has recorded four CDs\, and has also recorded TV shows for five different stations. P.E. plays at concerts\, restaurants\, and bars all through central Massachusetts\, and he is also enjoyed on the circuit of assisted living\, retirement\, and rehabilitation facilities. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n  \n \nJoe Fusco Jr. is a well-seasoned poet and humorist from Worcester\, Massachusetts. He is the author of four books of semi-amusing poems and essays: Pondering the Pandemic During the Rust Years (2021); Hmm…That’s Different (2020); Three Score (2014); and The Lost and Found Essays (2012)\, all available on Amazon. Joe’s musings have appeared in Damfino Press\, Ballard Street Poetry\, Worcester Review\, Asinine Poetry\, and the naughty ezine Clean Sheets. He’s been writing poetry and short fiction since he was in High School in the 1970s\, and has self-published 3 books: One Bad Day Deserves Another\, Moon Shine and Lemon Twists (both in 2016); and The Broken Mosaic (2021). His poetry chapbook\, Dreams and Other Magic was published by Alien Buddha Press in July of 2023. His poetry has appeared or is slated to appear soon in the online journal Verse Wrights and the print journal Rushing Thru the Dark from Choeofpleirn Press (pronounced chuf-plern). He also maintains a poetry blog\, Phlubbermatic. His fiction has appeared or is slated to appear soon in Esoterica Magazine and Half and One Magazine.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEric Petersen (AKA ESP) first arrived on Earth sometime in July 1976. However\, eyewitness testimony from this time is sketchy at best. He graduated from Oakmont Regional High School in 1995. He worked for nearly five years at Burbank Hospital. ESP attended classes at Mount Wachusett Community College. There he was a regular contributor to their monthly literary magazine. He is the author of “Sociopath: A True Story” and “Shorty Stories” which are autobiographical. He is also the author of the novella Retard and the short story “The Day After”. In addition\, he has a collection of poetry and short stories titled Literary Conception which is in the process of being re-edited. These titles are available through Kindle. ESP is also currently working on a project of producing poetry videos which can be seen on “poemsesp” on TikTok. Eric is a devoted father\, an avid reader\, and a builder of model rockets. He has been working in human services since 2000 and currently helps manage a home for men with traumatic brain injuries.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nCraig S. Semon is widely known as a popular reporter & entertainment columnist for both the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Worcester Magazine with his writing also appearing nationally in USA Today\, Yahoo News\, U.S. News & World Report\, Miami Herald\, Washington Times\, The Charlotte Observer\, Kansas City Star\, Bedford Minuteman\, Belmont Citizen-Herald and more. Lesser known is that Craig is a poet who pens wonderfully surreal and often hysterically funny poems. As a member of the Noh Place Artists’ Collective in Worcester in the 1980s\, his poetry has been recently featured in the Noh Place Poetry Anthology published in 2022. Craig has been famously quoted for saying “I saw Worcester in her face. I suggested she sees a dermatologist.”

The event is free and open to the public. \n  \n \n  \nBill TREMBLAY is an award-winning poet\, novelist\, teacher\, editor\, and reviewer whose work has appeared in ten full- length volumes of poetry including Crying in the Cheap Seats [University of Massachusetts Press]\, The Anarchist Heart [New Rivers Press]\, Duhamel: Ideas of Order in Little Canada [BOA Editions Ltd.]\, Shooting Script: Door of Fire [Eastern Washington University Press]. Hundreds of his poems have appeared in literary magazines and in such anthologies as the Pushcart Prize\, The Jazz Poetry Anthology\, Best American Poetry\, 2003\, In 1994\, he published his first novel\, The June Rise\, which was widely and favorably reviewed\, especially on NPR All Things Considered; In 2004\, his book\, Shooting Script: Door of Fire received the Colorado Book Award [2004]. He has received awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as The Pushcart Prize Anthology and the Corporation at Yaddo. He was a Fulbright visiting Lecturer at Universidade de Lisboa\, Portugal\, .Mr. Tremblay edited Colorado Review for 15 years\, and is the recipient of the John F. Stern Distinguished Professor award for his thirty-three years teaching in and directing the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Colorado State University. Admission is FREE and patrons are encouraged to bring non-alcoholic beverages and snacks to this family friendly event. Join us for an awesome time at Arts in The Garden! \n  \nCross Tracks is a 4 piece acoustic band that includes guitar\, fiddle\, mandolin\, harmonica and bass. Our name signifies that we have crossed the tracks of musical genre many times. Our music is drawn from several different traditions including folk\, bluegrass\, country\, jug band\, rock and blues that seamlessly fits together by a unified sound. We have played at many venues across New England including music venues\, orchards\, fairs and farmer’s markets. We love to perform! Our goal is to always deliver a performance that will help people feel better when they leave than they did when they arrived. \n  \n  \n\n  \n\n  \n \nTony Brown  is the author of nine individual chapbooks of poetry plus five ‘best of’ collections. He is also known for his vocal and musical talents as the front man to one of the regions most popular and provocative groups\, The Duende Project. DESCRIPTION:  \nWHAT: Slightly Off-beat Poets Presents: Paul Richmond and Candace Curran! \n\nWHERE: Betsy’s Backyard Stage 185 Arvidson Road Woodstock\, CT. \n\nWHEN: Sunday September 17th\, 2023 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm \n\nWHAT HAPPENS: Our feature poets of the month will each read for 20 minutes. Then we will take a quick break for book sales\, snacks and the raffle before starting the open mic. Open mic will be round robin\, one poem at a time until 4 PM. \n\nCOST: There will be a 50/50 raffle\, split between the feature and the winner. 5$ to enter. \n\nSIGN-UPS: There is room for 20 poets/ 40 guests total. GPS will send you to ways: If you come off Roseland Park Road (right near Roseland Park) onto Arvidson it will begin as paved and a sign will tell you when the pavement ends. Just stay to the right and 185 is about 1/2 mile up on the right side. \nIf it sends you up Child Hill Rd\, you will make a left onto Arvidson dirt road and it will be less than a 1/4 mile on the left. \nPLEASE DO NOT PARK ON STREET! Pull in the driveway and you can park on the grass along the edge or pull all the way around. Plenty of parking! \n  \n \n  \n  \nPaul Richmond was awarded beat poet laureate three times. He is best described as political\, deadpan and wryly humorous delivered in his own style. He has been called\, “Assassin of Apathy” – “power of words / humor – on the unthinkable\, the unsolvable\, to analyze\, to digest\, to give birth\, to creativity and hope.”  He has performed nationally and internationally. He created the project “Do It Now” He is also a publisher of over 50 writers and has 7 books himself. For more information\, go to his website. \nCandace R. Curran is author of Playing in Wrecks\, Haleys Press. She is the 2022 Slate Roof Elyse Wolf Prize winner with a chapbook released next year.  A full length poetry collection is expected in the Spring with Human Error Press. Her poetry has appeared in New Generation Beats\, Writing the Land\, Meat For Tea\, the Valley Review\, and RAW NerVZ Haiku. She is looking forward to being a Slightly Off-Beat Poet\, featuring with the infamous Paul Word Richmond.
