SUMMARY:The Packing House Poetry Series
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n\n \nThe December 21st show of The Packing House Poetry Series will feature Massachusetts based authors Robert Eugene Perry and Paul Szlosek.\n\n\nRobert Eugene Perry has had several poems published in Worcester Magazine\, as well as Poetica Magazine’s Mizmor Anthology\, NatureCulture’s Honoring Nature collection\, National Beat Poetry Foundation Remembering Jack Kerouac on his 100th Birthday\, Beat Style Love Poems and Natural Worlds\, Florence Poetry Society’s Silkworm 16\,  and the online publications Soul-Lit: a journal of spiritual poetry\, Poetica Magazine and The Academy of the Heart and Mind\, and his poem Primal was a finalist in the 2023 Beals Prize for Poetry. His short story In the Company of Trees was published by Wordpeace Journal.  As a metaphysical poet\, he finds inspiration in nature and endeavors to draw connections between our higher selves and the natural world.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Szlozek is a poet born in Southbridge\, Massachusetts\, but currently residing in the nearby metropolis of Worcester. The recipient of the 2023 Stanley Kunitz Medal as well as the Jacob Knight Award for Poetry in 2001\, he was co-founder and host of the long-running Poet’s Parlor poetry reading in Southbridge and Sturbridge. His poems have appeared in various local & national print & online publications including The Worcester Review\, Worcester Magazine\, Radius\, Sahara\, Concrete Wolf\, Soul-Lit\, and Diner. He’s probably best known in the Central Massachusetts poetry community for his fanatical obsession with obscure poetry forms\, and has invented his own including the ziggurat\, the streetbeatina\, the hodgenelle\, the lux\, and the singsangsong.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe show’s format will consist of two open mic segments as well as a pair of 15-minute slots for each of the featured artists. Intermission will give the audience and poets the chance to meet one another and the opportunity to purchase signed publications.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe open-mic segments will provide the opportunity for audience members to read their own original work. We are planning to allow for two half-hour sessions\, one at the beginning of the event\, and the other at the end. Readers will be given up to five minutes to present\, and we will have a sign-up sheet. This program is hosted by the “Eastern Connecticut Center for History\, Art\, and Performance” (EC-CHAP) and Steve Veilleux. Writers who are interested in featuring should reach out to either Steve Veilleux (Veilleuxs50@gmail.com) or Tom Buccino (info@ecchap.org).\n\n\n\n\nSoft drinks and snacks available. We are pleased to offer our exclusive “BYOB&F” TM model – Bring Your Own Beverage & Food TM (Wine & Beer Only -I.D. Required).\n\n\n\nFree Admission

SUMMARY:Poetorium at Starlite Poetry Open Mic & Reading Series Featuring Glenn D’Alessio and Kerrissa Cobb
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special double feature edition of our monthly open mic and featured poetry reading series The Poetorium at Starlite hosted by Ron Whittle. It will be a full evening of poetry and spoken word starting with a brief interview on stage with our two featured poets Glenn D’Alessio (Author of In My Sea Cliff Years of Innocence\, A Carpenter’s Building\, Homes for His Poems\, and Some Tanka in Thanks to Elroy\, Not the Most Cantankerous Dog) and Kerrissa Cobb (Writer\, Educator\, & Poet) followed by poetry readings by our features\, a 10-minute tribute to a dead poet by a guest reader\, a short intermission\, and then an open mic (with 5-minute slots for each reader). Admission is free\, but a hat will be passed for donations to pay our feature and compensate Starlite for the use of their space. For more information\, please contact us at poetorium@mail.com or visit our WEBSITE \n  \nGlenn D’Alessio plays flute in the Worcester State Jazz Band\, and in the Florence MA Community Band. He was a past college instructor about energy conservation\, and also green building\, who is still a carpenter and builder from West Brookfield\, MA. For several years he was a volunteer with the “Worcester Energy Barn Raisers” (WEBr) who weatherized numerous places — weatherization being like tightening a ship to keep water\, ants\, and rot out; and during the winter\, the heat in. His Finishing Line Press chapbooks are In My Sea Cliff Years of Innocence\, A Carpenter’s Building\, Homes for His Poems\, and Some Tanka in Thanks to Elroy\, Not the Most Cantankerous Dog. Other poems of his have appeared ‘Here and There\,’ which hopefully sounds like quite a journal. A full-length manuscript he has high hopes for is Between Merwin and Greger\, Overtones of Poetry. Poems there play off of quotes from both W.S. Merwin’s Migration and Debora Greger’s The 1002nd Night. He shares many of their environmental attitudes and loves their poetry. plays flute in the Worcester State Jazz Band\, and in the Florence MA Community Band. For several years he was a volunteer with the “Worcester Energy Barn Raisers” (WEBr) who weatherized numerous places — weatherization being like tightening a ship to keep water\, ants\, and rot out; and during the winter\, the heat in. \n \nKerrissa Cobb is a writer\,‭ poet\, and educator from Dudley\, Massachusetts. You’ll often find her a bit further south\, ‬attending events around Putnam\, Connecticut. While she has only a singular poem officially published\, she continues to write and work towards a full collection of poems. Outside of poetry her writing interests lie in short stories\, \n\nespecially flash fiction. Many of her works incorporate nature\, mythology\, and mysticism and how they relate to her own life. Outside of writing\, her hobbies are numerous and sometimes fleeting. She is proudly a jack-of-all-trades\, although eventually\, she would like to master at least one of them.

SUMMARY:A Virtual Thirsty Lab with Cheryl Bonin
DESCRIPTION:The Thirsty Lab poetry reading\, normally based out of Princeton\, Mass.\, continues to meet virtually. On Tuesday\, November 28th\, 2023 Cheryl Bonin will be the featured reader. Please Click Here to register. \n\n  \n  \nRegister \n  \n \n  \n\n\n  \nCheryl L. Bonin is a cancerous wench (of the breast variety) who writes darkly humorous snark-filled poetry\, nonfiction essays and short stories about her experiences living with a shitty disease because it’s cheaper than therapy. She counts among her finer yet distinctly dubious experiences: firing a civil war cannon twice without loss of limb\, driving a team of sled dogs across a frozen Canadian tundra without falling off the sled and busting her fat ass\, getting motorboated by a complete stranger in a Nashville honky tonk\, and kissing Tony Orlando\, Burt Reynolds and Johnny Depp without their permission. She is the 3rd place winner of the 2022 Frank O’Hara Poetry Contest\, for her poem “Burnt”\, which was subsequently published in the Worcester Review. She also had one of her nonfiction essays published in the Worcester Magazine in October of 2023. When not ranting about how much she despises the color pink or out seeking random photo ops with famous male celebrities\, Cheryl is hard at work on her debut manuscript\, “ Impressive\, But Not In a Good Way” which she hopes to have published while she’s still vertical.. \n\n

SUMMARY:Dining with War: Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Woodstock Poet Launches New Book: Dining with War \n  \n  \nWoodstock poet Karen Warinsky will launch her new book\, Dining with War\, at three locations in November. \n  \nThe book\, published by Alien Buddha Press\, is a deep look at how different types of warfare operate as a backdrop to everyday life. Warinsky says\, “The idea for this project is built around the fact that I often take a meal while watching warfare on the news\, and also memories of arguments and battles that took place around dinner tables (some more light-hearted than others). Poems about fights with parents\, tricky salary negotiations in my 20s\, a date gone wrong in Seattle\, the night I was almost kidnapped in Japan\, and a weekend at the Jersey shore with disgruntled dance moms are all here. Also in this book are pieces about the Civil War\, Vietnam\, Syria\, George Floyd and our nation’s current civil strife. Several poems were previously published including “Be in the Yard\,” “Nazi Breakfast\,” “Snapshots of Your War\,” and “Judy Woodruff Makes it Palatable.” \n  \nWest Coast writer Scott Ferry calls it an “important book” and said in a review “ Warinsky… speaks with blinding precision about wars of all types: with the in-laws\, with racism\, with PTSD\, with society itself. Every poem is a complete world…This book is unflinchingly honest\, but also hopeful\, “ensuring the future with careful harvest\, / a covenant of reciprocity.” Host of Wednesday Night Poetry and Hot Springs Arkansas poet laureate Kai Coggin says\, “Karen Warinsky’s new book is filled with cutting and thought-provoking language and imagery\, with a masterful use of ironic juxtaposition to point out the almost surreal desensitization of American culture.” \n  \n \n

Every poem is a complete world…This book is unflinchingly honest\, but also hopeful\, “ensuring the future with careful harvest\, / a covenant of reciprocity.” Host of Wednesday Night Poetry and Hot Springs Arkansas poet laureate Kai Coggin says\, “Karen Warinsky’s new book is filled with cutting and thought-provoking language and imagery\, with a masterful use of ironic juxtaposition to point out the almost surreal desensitization of American culture.” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ron Whittle Veterans Day Tribute Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Veterans Day tribute reading as Vietnam veteran and poet Ron Whittle reads from Postcards From a War Zone and his other poetry collections to be followed by an open reading (two poems or five minutes for each reader with the sign-up starting at 5 p.m.).\n  \nRon Whittle \nRon Whittle was born in Worcester\, MA in 1947 and was educated in his hometown of Shrewsbury MA. Further education came by way of the U.S. Navy\, Veteran of the Vietnam Conflict\, the Apollo 13 recovery team\, and 50 years of family living. Ron divides his time between his home in Worcester\, and the shores of Cape Cod. Ron’s free-verse poetry is recognized as thoughtful\, romantic\, thought-provoking\, serious\, and funny. His wonderfully warped and quirky point of view will surely make you smile and perhaps give you a laugh. His influences include Tom Waits\, Lawrence Ferlinghetti\, Edgar Allan Poe\, Ogden Nash\, Jack Kerouac\, and Rod McKuen to name a few. Those who have enjoyed Ron’s previous work can hear and see him in appearances throughout New England. Ron has appeared on television shows such as “Wake Up and Smell the Poetry Starring Cheryl Perrault” and the Worcester Public Access Cable Vision.  Most recently\, he was on the radio with poet and radio personality Tommy Twilight in Florence\, MA. He has read at many major poetry events such as the Massachusetts Poetry Festival in Salem\, MA\, the National Beat Poetry Foundation in Connecticut\, the Great Falls Word Festival at Turners Falls\, MA. and the Quabbin Garlic Festival in Orange\, MA. He also recently appeared with other beat poets at the International Beat Poets yearly review. Much of his poetry has been published in both print and online journals such as Vietnam War Poetry\, Lavida Life Magazine\, The Quabbin Review\, and the anthology Hope Through Community. Ron’s book Postcards From a War Zone was accepted into the collection at the acclaimed New York City’s Poet House. Ron’s books are currently available on Amazon as well as internationally. Ron is also a founder and co-host of the Poetorium Poetry Show at the Starlite Bar & Gallery in Southbridge\, MA. Somehow\, he survived and escaped the ravages of the COVID-19 epidemic\, but could not escape the bodily damage left over from Vietnam. Three years later\, he’s a survivor of cancer caused by the effects of Agent Orange.
