DESCRIPTION:Poet Eve Rifkah is teaching a series of virtual poetry writing workshops through the Worcester Institute for Senior Education (WISE) at Assumption College. You do not need to be a member of WISE to participate\, but you do have to set up an account through their website. Here is the course description: \n“When our minds are empty of ideas\, a prompt can open the door to otherwise unknown thoughts. Prompts are used to jumpstart writing into new territory or could trigger a memory. Prior to each class\, a prompt with an example poem will be provided. There will also be a backup prompt in case the first is not working.  Poems will be read and discussed during class.” \nThe virtual workshop series fee is $50.00 and begins Thursday\, June 17\, 2021. Meg is also the author of The Ice Storm\, a heroic crown of sonnets published as a chapbook in 2020 (now in its third printing!); Home By Now\, winner of the 2010 PEN New England LL Winship Award and a finalist for the Paterson Poetry Prize and Foreword Magazine‘s Book of the Year\, and An Unkindness of Ravens. Meg also writes for young people\, including three novels in verse for teens and a picture book\, Trouper\, winner of the 2015 Kentucky Bluegrass Award. DESCRIPTION:The WCPA is happy to help the Thirsty Lab poetry reading go virtual for their 4th (and occasional 5th) Tuesday reading.  On Tuesday\, April 27\, 20201\, Terry Farish will be the feature. \nVisit the Zoom registration link to receive information on how to join the reading\, and Zoom will send you an e-mail with the meeting details and link. \nRegister \nTerry Farish writes picture books\, novels\, and poetry.  The Good Braider\, a novel in verse about a girl from South Sudan is an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults.  Flower Shadows\, about the war in Vietnam\, is a novel for adults described by Kirkus as a “female addition to the Vietnam genre that is as moving as it is wise.” Many of her books are about families who have come to the U.S. as refugees\, including Either the Beginning or the End of the World.  Recently she collaborated with a South Sudanese writer\, OD Bonny\,  to create A Feast for Joseph\, coming out in September.  She’s very honored to be part of the I’m Your Neighbor Project\, a program that promotes the use of picture books from many cultures to create community conversations about immigrants. She used to be the children’s librarian in Leominster\, which is how she met up with the Worcester County Poets. Now she lives in Maine.

Gaffney is the Artistic Director of Stage Presence Productions; is the Host\, Writer\, and Producer of the Radio Show “The African American Experience” (which was recognized in O Magazine) and is the FIRST and ONLY Woman of Color to portray Esmerelda Scrooge in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (produced by Stage Presence Productions). \nRush Frazier (they/them) is an artist\, activist\, and Worcester native. Frazier has published twelve chapbooks\, toured nationally\, and has twice represented Worcester at national poetry slam competitions. They are a recent recipient of the Key to the City and a past president of the Worcester County Poetry Association. Rush is currently the president of 508Pride. \nYouth Poet Laureate Amina Mohammed grew up in Worcester’s Main South neighborhood\, the daughter of an immigrant family. Her parents worked long hours to provide for her and her siblings with considerable support from neighbors. Mohammad is the first Youth Poet Laureate in the state of Massachusetts. \nXaulanda Thorpe is a spoken word poet from Worcester\, Massachusetts. She graduated from Boston University with a degree in biological anthropology in January 2020. During her time at BU\, when she was not examining primate samples\, she wrote short stories for Charcoal Magazine\, a student-led publication. In 2021\, Xaulanda’s poem was chosen for the African Burial Ground National Monument’s “Still I Rise” tribute to Maya Angelou. \nAshley Wonder has been writing for over ten years. She started out performing in black churches in Worcester. Then became a part of the Slam Community in 2014. Repping Worcester\, her hometown\, in Oakland 2015\, Decatur\, GA in 2016. She has had the opportunity to perform at the National Education Support Professional Conference (a part of the Massachusetts Teacher Association) in 2021 that had an audience of 2\,000 people! She also had the honor to be a part of the “Still I Rise” Maya Angelou tribute Festival.

He is also the author of Spin Cycles\, a novella published by Gemma Media. Charles was selected as a Boston Literary Light by the Associates of the Boston Public Library and is a former artist fellow at the St. Botolph Club in Boston and a current artist-in-residence at the Manship House in Gloucester. \nA short film by filmmaker Roberto Mighty\, “Peach Pie\,” was based on his poem\, “Fortress” which has been shown at film festivals nationwide. Another short film\, “Charles Coe: Man of Letters\,” also by Roberto Mighty was named “Outstanding Documentary Short” at the 2020 Roxbury Film Festival. \nCharles was a 2017 artist-in-residence for the city of Boston\, where he created an oral history project focused on residents of Mission Hill. He is poetry editor of “Multiplicity\,” an online literary journal published by Bay Path University in Longmeadow\, Mass\, and associate editor of “About Place\,” an online literary journal published by Black Earth Institute. \nCharles has served as poet-in-residence at Wheaton College and at the Chautauqua Institution in New York State and is an adjunct professor of English at Salve Regina University in Newport\, Rhode Island\, and Bay Path University\, where he teaches in both MFA programs. He is co-chair of the Boston Chapter of The National Writers Union\, a labor union for freelance writers and editors. \n

Her awards include multiple Pushcart Prize nominations\, a Loft-McKnight Foundation Award\, a Jerome Foundation Travel\, and Study Grant\, a Lake Superior Contemporary Writers Award\, residencies at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies\, the Leighton Studios at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, the Blacklock Nature Sanctuary\, a Career Initiative Grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council as well as both a Fellowship Grant and a Career Opportunity Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. \nHer poems have been published widely in such literary journals as The North American Review\, Ploughshares\, Poetry International\, Nimrod and have been anthologized in To Sing Along the Way: Minnesota Women Poets from Pre-territorial Days to the Present\, 33 Minnesota Poets\, The Cancer Poetry Project\, and Broad Wings\, Long Legs: A Rookery of Heron Poems\, forthcoming in 2022. Pure syllabic poetry is common in languages like Japanese but rarer in English\, which counts both syllables and stresses. Starting with haikus\, we will try our hands at writing tankas\, nonets\, roundels\, cinquains\, and diamantes. And as we go along\, we’ll applaud each other’s syllabic creations and explore how poets like Yeats\, Thomas\, and Plath used the syllabic form.  \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops\, and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series. \nThis event is organized by Worcester Public Library.

DESCRIPTION:The Working Writers Series at College of the Holy Cross is presenting a virtual poetry reading by Joy Priest.  Registration is needed to join the event. A meeting link will be e-mailed to you. \nRegister \nJoy Priest is the author of Horsepower (Pitt Poetry Series\, 2020)\, which won the 2019 Donald Hall Prize for Poetry\, judged by Natasha Trethewey. Horsepower is designed as a radical Bildungsroman in poetic form\, tracing a young Black girl’s attempts to escape from the influences of both her white supremacist grandfather and the bitterly segregated urban South where she grew up. Priest has received many awards and fellowships\, most recently the 2020 Stanley Kunitz Prize. She has published poems in the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day\, APR\, The Atlantic\, Blackbird\, Gulf Coast\, Poetry Northwest\, The Rumpus\, and other places. Her essays have appeared in The Bitter Southerner\, Poets & Writers\, ESPN\, and The Undefeated\, and her work has been anthologized in Breakbeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop; The Louisville Anthology; A Measure of Belonging: Writers of Color on the New American South; and Best New Poets 2014\, 2016\, and 2019. Priest has been a journalist\, theater attendant\, waitress\, and fast-food worker in Kentucky\, and has facilitated writing workshops and arbitration programs with adult and juvenile incarcerated women. She holds an MFA in poetry from the University of South Carolina and is now pursuing a PhD in literature and creative writing at the University of Houston\, with a background in postcolonial studies\, Black\, Latinx\, and Native poetics\, and feminist theory.
