His new book of poetry Brutal Rhymes for Brutal Times was released last year. Struggles with depression\, substance abuse\, parental alienation and divorce—the author has had a lifetime of experiences. Add to that all he has seen in his twenty-five years of human services and you can understand why ESP’s poetry has served as a coping mechanism and passion for him. He is a regular at Open Mics around New England including Pour Me a Poem in Mansfield MA\, Slightly Off-Beat Poets in CT\, The Openest Mic in Fitchburg MA\, and New Dawn Writers Group. His poetry can be found in Silkworm 17 The annual review of the Florence Poetry Society\, Many Voices -One Stage\, How do you see the world?\, anthologies and more. His Novella\, Retard\, and book\, Sociopath: a true story\, are available on Kindle. ESP currently is working on a new book of poetry Memos from the milieu. DESCRIPTION:Come out to the New Dawn Writers’ Group’s Poetry Workshop. Every third Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. We will discuss poems and writing\, write to prompts\, give feedback\, encourage one another\, and discuss upcoming projects. It’s a friendly\, pressure-free atmosphere at the New Dawn Arts Center in Ashburnham. Many of our poets have had books come out in the past year. Join in the fun! The workshop is being led by Fred Gerhard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFred Gerhard leads the Poetry Workshop\, and is one of the open mic hosts\, for the New Dawn Writers’ Group. DESCRIPTION:The Library of America Anthology presentation by Dr. Naida Saavedra \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMultiple Voices\, Identities\, and Homes is presented as part of Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home\, a major public humanities initiative taking place across the nation in 2024 and 2025\, directed by Library of America and funded with generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Emerson Collective. \n\n\n\nThe Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to host a presentation by Dr Naida Saavedra who will introduce the collection and highlight some of the major poets and their poems that have contributed to the canon. The event will run from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. Free event. All welcome! \n\n\n\nFor nearly five centuries\, the rich tapestry of Latino poetry has been woven from a wealth of languages and cultures. With distinctive rhythms\, lyricism\, and candor\, and nuanced understandings of place\, history\, and origin\, Latino poets have brought dazzling insight to what it means to make a home in America. \n\n\n\nRecognition of the beauty and power of this tradition has grown in recent years\, with Latino poets receiving two national and twelve state Poet Laureateships\, two Pulitzer Prizes\, and three National Book Awards. At the same time\, the perennial questions confronted by Latino poets—of exile and belonging\, language and identity\, struggle and solidarity\, and labor and landscape—have become ever more urgent. \n\n\n\nWhat does Latino poetry reveal about America? How might it help us imagine a more just\, joyful\, and capacious future? Places We Call Home seeks to foster nationwide conversation on this vital literature through a groundbreaking new anthology edited by Rigoberto González\, events around the country\, an online media archive\, and a wealth of library resources meant to spur in-depth reflection and discussion on key figures and themes. \n\n\n\nLibrary of America is a nonprofit organization that champions our nation’s cultural heritage by publishing America’s greatest writing in authoritative new editions and providing resources for readers to explore this rich\, living legacy. \n\n\n\nLatino Poetry: Places We Call Home (Lugares que llamamos hogar) es una gran iniciativa pública en el campo de las humanidades\, que se proyecta para el 2024 – 2025. Es dirigida por Library of América con el generoso apoyo del Fondo Nacional para las Humanidades y Emerson Collective.Desde hace cinco siglos\, una gran variedad de lenguas y culturas se vienen entretejiendo para formar ese colorido tapiz que es la poesía latina en Estados Unidos. Saavedra holds a PhD in Latin American and Latinx Literature from Florida State University and her research focuses on issues of identity\, migration\, and social media in contemporary Latinx literature. She is documenting the current USA literary movement in Spanish for which she published the essay book #NewLatinoBoom: cartografía de la narrativa en español de EE UU (El BeiSmAn PrESs\, 2020). He and his wife\, Meryl\, run a non-profit charity\, The Charlotte Frey Foundation\, whose mission is to help children with multiple handicaps and life-threatening illnesses and their families improve their quality of life. Among other places\, his work has been published in Passages North\, december magazine\, The Adroit Journal\, Bellevue Literary Review\, New York Quarterly\, and The Missouri Review\, where he was awarded the Perkoff Prize for poetry. His hybrid prose chapbook\, Strange Vigil\, was a winner in the Black River Chapbook competition and is forthcoming with Black Lawrence Press in the fall of 2025. DESCRIPTION:Poets at Large will continue their fall series on Nov. 23rd at The Vanilla Bean Café\, 450 Deerfield Road\, Pomfret\, CT. That evening Massachusetts Lifetime Beat Poet Laureate and musician Tommy Twilite will be the featured performer.  \n\n\n\nTwilite is a Massachusetts troubadour who combines music\, poetry\, exploration and adventure into his performances. He is the co-founder and director of the Florence Poets Society and the host of the Twilite Poetry Pub on WXOJ Valley Free Radio. His latest chapbook\, “Kills No Bird” is a follow up to his 2021 collection\, “Fifty Words for Rain”. Tommy Twilite is well known as someone who can transport an audience to another realm with his words and music. He was recently honored by the National Baseball Poetry Festival for his poem\, “The Tools of Ignorance.” Tommy is the editor of Silkworm\, an annual review\, and is a Lifetime Beat Poet Laureate. He believes poetry and song can renew the Earth.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese Saturday evenings of spoken word and poetry are from 7-9 p.m. Admission is $15.00 and includes a give-away. DESCRIPTION:Poet Chen Yihai from Yancheng Teachers University (China) will read from his own work with KSC Advanced Poetry Workshop Students in English and Mandarin. The reading will be held in the Archives Classroom\, Room 132\, Mason Library. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-sponsored by the Monadnock Pastoral Poets and KSC Modern Poetry Collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYihai Chen\, PhD\, a professor from the School of Chinese Language and Literature in Yancheng Teachers University\, was born in Jiangsu Province. He began poetry writing in early 1980’s\, and has published more than 600 poems home and abroad. \n\n\n\nHe was a visiting scholar to the Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies in the University of Warwick in 2005\, during which he won the second prize in the 40th anniversary poetry competition of this University. In 2006\, he won the first prize in an English poetry competition sponsored by the British Consulate. The first collection of his English poetry Song of Simone & Seven Sad Songs was published by Heaventree Press in 2005. \n\n\n\nHe is the translator of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice\, Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’urbervilles\, Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe\, Charles Dickens’ The Tale of Two Cities\, as well as many foreign poems. \n\n\n\nHe is also a scholar of comparative culture and translation studies.
