SUMMARY:New Dawn Poetry Reading: Rena Gerhard
DESCRIPTION:Fred Gerhard\, author of Drifting to “Hello” and Lilacs Still Bloom in Ashburnham\, will be reading poems from his mother\, Rena Gerhard’s posthumously published book\, The Loving: Selected Poems. Following the reading at 8:00 p.m. we transition to our monthly fourth Tuesday Open Mic. At New Dawn Arts Center\, 84 Main Street in Ashburnham\, MA. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rena Gerhard: \n\n\n\n“As the middle of the Twentieth Century approached\, a young woman near Reading\, Pennsylvania\, took up poetry keenly aware of the thick\, heavy glass ceiling hovering over every line she wrote…The silence seems too tense. / One fears to breathe in case one might / Thus doing\, cause offense. She quietly kept at it\, quietly riding that horse\, as she notes in ‘Strange Steed’: When the wise had gone to bed / To receive their well-earned rest\, / Then I watched him as he fed\, / And I sat his back\, a guest / Instead.” \n\n\n\n—Rodger Martin\, author of The Sleeping Dogs of Lubec\, The Nemo Poems: A Martian Perspective\, The Blue Moon Series\, and For All the Tea in Zhōngguó \n\n\n\n“So many people long for that presence\, which would keep their loved ones alive forever. We search under afghans\, trapse through attics\, and roam down long forgotten places for one gem\, one picture\, or one word that would help us remember. Rena\, through her poetry\, The Loving — she has remained. Be there for a moment with her\, and soon\, you too\, will be jumping in and enjoying her enchanting dance with words.” \n\n\n\n—H. SUMMARY:Poetorium Too featuring Lee Desrosiers\, Jasmin Rivas\, & Cheryl Bonin
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Wednesday triple feature edition of our monthly open mic and featured poetry reading series  Poetorium Too at TidePool Bookshop (located at 372 Chandler Street in Worcester\, MA) on October 28th from 5 pm to 7 pm hosted by Paul Szlosek and (hopefully) Ron Whittle.  It will be a full two hours of poetry and spoken word featuring 15 minute readings each by poets Lee Desrosiers\,  Jasmin Rivas\, & Cheryl Bonin\, followed by the passing of a hat to pay our features\, a short intermission\, and then an open mic with 5-minute slots for each reader if time allows (in order to fit everything planned into our allotted time\, if the event runs too long\, readers may be restricted to one poem). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLee Desrosiers (they/she) graduated in 2008 from the New England College MFA program in Poetry. Their fourth and latest full-length book of poems is Pocketing the Light (Kelsay Books 2026). Other books include: The Philosopher’s Daughter (2013)\, Sometimes I Hear the Clock Speak (2016)\, and Keeping Planes in the Air (2020). Two chapbooks\, Inner Sky and Typing with e.e. cummings\, are from Glass Lyre Press. They edit and publish an international journal of narrative poetry\, Naugatuck River Review and Wordpeace.co\, a multi-genre online literary journal dedicated to peace and social justice. Lee lives\, teaches and writes in Westfield\, Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nJasmin Rivas is a Puerto Rican mother\, bilingual writer\, spoken word artist\, community activist\, educator and the President of Jaz-Yoga/Health and Wellness.  Born in New Haven\, Connecticut\, she grew up in a bicultural home in Southbridge where she spent summers in Juncos\, Puerto Rico.  Jasmin believes her writing gives voice to the experiences of the people she advocates for and the stories of her ancestors from the island that she carries in her bones. She has been published in the anthology\, Ella Poderosa and Bay Path University’s Multiplicity Magazine. She was recently one of the featured spoken word poets at The Openest Mic at the Fitchburg Art Museum. Last year she was selected to read at the Emily Dickenson Tell It Slant Festival Open Mic. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Bay Path University and a Masters in Yoga\, Mindfulness and Social\, Emotional Learning from Woolf University. \n\n\n\nCheryl L. Bonin is a bourbon-sipping\, baseball-watching\, pirate-loving\, Neil Diamond-singing\, cancerous wench of  the breast variety who writes snark filled stories and poetry because it’s cheaper than therapy. Her rantings have been encouraged\, tolerated\, published and/or acknowledged by: her Good Sport Hubby\, random unsuspecting open mic attendees\, The Worcester Review\, Worcester Magazine\, Three Decker\, The National Baseball Poetry Festival\, The Eastport (Maine) Library Review and the 2022 Frank O’Hara Poetry Contest. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Szlosek
